You should not wrap anything around the damper to use the outer ring to hold the damper to install the bolt. You can damage the rubber ring integrity between the inner hub and outer ring. Also, the bolt is turned/torqued into the crank - the crank is what should be held - not the outer ring. Using the correct tool to hold the flex plate is the correct method. Also, jacking blocks against the outer ring is just as bad if not worse.
