Default 2002 Z06 erratic oil pressure

Replaced the oil pressure sending unit 6 months ago. Added the manual gauge under the hood. Driving today and the “service engine soon” indicator came on at a stop light. Oil pressure dropped to zero, then immediately bounced over 40. Climbed to 80. Then fell to 20. Then normal while driving. Basically it’s all over the place. I couldn’t jump out fast enough to check the manual gauge under the hood. No odd noises or smells. Other temperatures stayed normal.

Can a failing pump jump the pressure around that fast? I’m assuming it’s another bad sensor. Glad I relocated it.

Thoughts?

Yes, I'd bet on the sensor. If the pump went... you know it. Any time you have an analog gauge jumping about, you can guess that the sending unit is wonky.

Now, with the needle jumping I bet you have a loose wire as the sending unit is being grounded/un grounded in rapid susseccion. If your wires are clean/secure, swap the sending unit.

Sounds like you need to replace the switch again. Maybe an AC Delco unit this time?

Can’t believe it failed again after only 6 months. But I’m glad I relocated it to make the change easy.

Ill take a look at the connection and see if there are issues there.

I just didnt want to overlook the possibility of a failing pump.

Pressure was good for a 2 hour highway drive just before this started happening.

What brand was it? If it was a parts store brand, 6 months is pretty typical. 90% of the items in a parts store are absolute junk.

It was whatever brand comes with the relocation kit and manual gauge offered by TPE, I believe. I have no problem springing for a Delco unit. I just hope that the rest of the kit lasts longer than the sender.

Delcos are junk too.

If you find one with a brass body (instead of typical aluminum) made in Mexico those are the best ones.

Just to come full circle here...it was the sensor.

Thankfully, relocating it made it a 20 minute job instead of 3 hours. Best money spent so far!

Well I, for one, want to extend a big thanks for bringing this to the conclusion. More data -- complete data at that! -- that will work when/if I have a similar problem. Well done!
