Default LS1 vs LS2/3 Pilot Bearing Conversion

I am curious as to if any of you have tried to use the LS2/3 style roller bearing in your C5 as an alternative to the stock needle bearings.

The roller bearings used in the C6 sit out further, in the location that the torque converter sits in on an automatic car. This would mean that the splined input shaft would be too long.

Has anyone tried to machine down the splined input shaft to work with the newer style roller bearing? Of even tried using the splined input shaft from a C6?

I have seen the needle bearings fail several times and tear up the end of the input shaft. This scenario is far more unlikely with the roller style bearing.

Anyone have any input on this?

If anyone has torn up or damaged input shafts laying around and you don't want them, I'll pay for shipping. I want to try and turn a few down to work with the newer bearing. I'll send it back to you free of charge if it works.

Here's an interesting thread related to what you're working with that might be helpful:

Old thread but anyone have any luck doing this conversion? My input shaft was damaged when the needle bearing fell apart after 20k miles. My LS7 clutch set came with the newer ball bearing so it would be much cheaper if I could modify the shaft for the bigger bearing.

Im In the same boat.. old thread I know... I don’t see any reason why a c5 input shaft couldn’t be modified to accept the C6 larger bearing. C5 shafts are easy to damage and hard to find in good shape.. anyone ??
