Default Stock motor C5 breaks 4.10's

Saturday morning I went to the CARTEK Corvette Challenge at Englishtown with my STOCK motor C5 and my BFG Drag Radials on. I did my burnout for my first pass, pulled up to the line, brought the car up to 2500 rpm's and the BOOM!!!!! My car would not go anywhere. I had to get pushed off to the side of the track (how embarrassing). Thankfully I was able to move the car, in first gear about 5 mph along the side road to the end of the 1/4 mile. ChrisC5 from East Coast SuperCharging was there along with Rom to help me see what happened. We borrowed and jack from a fellow reacer, put the car in gear, jacked it up and the spun both wheels freely.....there you have it folks, done, blown rear!! :mad I purchased the rear unit through A&A Corvettes and it was sent through him by Corvettes of Houston. When I purchased the unit I opted for the hardened shafts, even though I have a stock motored C5, I was not sure how much more I was gonna mod it. I had to get the car flat bedded to Chris' shop in Montclair, East Coast SuperCharging. Thank GOD my father lives close by and had a truck to rent a trailer.

That totally sucks. I am afraid of this happening to me. Will it be expensive to fix (typical rear end install).

:cry sorry to hear about your issues.

I am not sure I have seen one good report from anyone with 4.10s. Seems the biggest I have seen without problems are 3.90s.

Well, squash the sticky tire launching with my 4.10s. This was with a hardened output shaft, correct? Street tires are staying on mine. I'm sorry about your misfortune. This is the FIRST negative thing I have heard about the 4.10s.

BTW, I'm glad I kept my core 3.42s. What is AA or COH going to do about this? Where did it break? The shaft, the case?

WCC and COH have had cases break now, Cartek hasn't however Cartek hasn't setup a fraction of the gear sets that WCC And COH have. Hmmm.

I did the same thing with the 3.73's in my car only I wound the motor to 3000, dropped the clutch and nailed the gas with Drag Radials... Snapped the left axle in the diff. Lucky for me I had a truck and trailer there to take the car home in. If I am going to race my car I always take the T&T with me. :yesnod:

Sorry to hear this. I was at the NCM Labor Day bash a few days ago and talked to Chuck Mallet about this very thing. He doesn't advise going above a 3.73 rear gear.

I am really sorry to hear about your misfortune man. That really sucks!!!! :U I'm sure many here will point to the install of your 4.10s and so we may as well ask you now, who installed the gears?

Better luck to you and hope your on the road soon!

YOu must have missed the hotly discussed post then about 2 months ago regarding the first 3.90 gear from WCC which broke at the drags on a MN6 C5! :U I'm sure you can look at the archives and dig that post up as it was very long and vigoursly discussed!

Can we get some autopsy photos? Your description sounds more like an output shaft than anything else.

I saw the report, I meant above constant problems. I know several people with 3.90s without issues, but for my money, I would not go larger than 3.73s.

I, for one, would be VERY interested in what the final diagnosis is and if it does turn out to be the output shaft, whose shaft did you have in there? I feel your pain :cry as I also broke at the line (output shaft) with a stock motor. Good luck and please give us a follow-up!

Man, that's a bummer! It's in good hands though and will be up and running in no time.

Bummers.

If I remember correctly; Getrag never made carriers with 3.90 or 4.10's.
So it had to be an upgraded carrier.

Do you know for certain yet that the hardened shaft is what failed?

It really sounds like the HOS. If you broke the ring and pinion the wheels would probably lock up from the floating teeth(I had this happen before). Get some pics and lets get this resolved. Sory to hear about the misfortune.

If this is the HOS from COH now I'm worried b/c they told me it was the same shaft that Chris@SpeedDemon uses but the one COH has is also shot peened. I have read on some metallurgy sites that shot peening can causes metals to be come more brittle in some cases because it makes the metal have less "play" it compared to the unshotpeened, tooled 300M that Chris uses. I highly doubt I'll ever stick a set of BFGs on the car now :(
