Small nut that slides in hole in frame
Has anyone else ever installed exhaust or anything else that uses a small nut that slides up through one of the oblong holes in the frame and then straddles it with small lips to catch it for a bolt? I am installing a used part that needs one of those and have no idea what to call it to search for one. Thanks for any suggestions

I think he is talking about the hex-shaped punch holes in the front and rear cross-member. At any rate you are correct, he needs a round hole, and the right diameter. So, I would probably drill next to the little hex holes.
If I were mounting mufflers and using the rear crossmember, I would take the rear fascia off and make a good backup plate inside the corss member. That crossmember is only 16ga steel and I would worry about pull-out. Both fromt and rear fascias are easy to take off; a lift makes it easier

go to a place that installs trailer hitches
they use HD hardware like that all the time
I got bolt and wide flat nut dealie to use to install a hitch on a car
used safety wire to fish from the oval hole a foot or so away from where the hitch hole was
wasn't very difficult

Hitch
see if these photos help. We made a hitch for a friend's C6GS and used those holes for the back of the frame. i have put Curt hitches on C5's before, and you have to drill a couple holes about 3/4 inches in diameter in the frame to fish the bolting pieces through. I ground a flat spot on the end of the bolts to hold them to tighten the nut. If you use those oval holes, you will need to grind with a die grinder to get the punch-out piece out of the hole that the factory left.

if you were installing a draw-tite hitch it originally came with nuts that have long handles formed onto them so that you can slide the nuts into the frame and push them down into place. Were I home I'd post a picture as I have a setup sitting on the bench. Alas im traveling and have no pictures of them on this phone. check the draw-tite website for replacements maybe?

as noted you can make your own or go to a hitch installer who will sell thick rectangular metal plates with a square hole in them
and Grade 5 or 8 carriage bolts that you feed into the hole using wire like the pix above
then the square part of the carriage bolt fits into the hole in the plate and the plate jams into place in the frame rail to allow tightening the bolt to proper torque
I used safety wire to make my own fishing device rather than buying the one from the hitch place
need something strong and thin to conform to the threads of the bolt
