You could just use some 3M double-sided tape instead of the magnet. Just stick the tape to the magnet. :yesnod:

Thanks for the replies. I ended up mounting it on the dash using velcro. The antenna has enough line of sight with the sky to get the GPS satellites and achieve a lock.

Thanks again,

Matt

You could use some epoxy and attached a piece of iron (powder coated so it won't rust), to the underside of the body at the place you want to attached the antenna. Then the magnet will stick.

You could use a magnetized piece of iron to insure a good grip.

I've heard of that being done to the rear bumper cover. It's thin and would allow the magnet to pull hard onto the metal piece placed underneath.

I have been using a magnetic dual-band ham antenna on my 2001. I will try to find a picture; however, the way I got to work was to lay flat (thiin) steel plate that was spray painted black in the hatch area and have the antenna attached. The dual-band antenna is about 13" high and does not touch the glass on the rear hatch. It looks like a cell phone antenna. It works and is better than no antenna at all. I suggest you try a steel cookie sheet as a test.

On my previous car (Black 96 Coupe) I used a thru-the-glass dual-band antenna mounted on the windshield behing the mirror. It worked great!

Note the antenna behind the mirror.

The coax ran under the mouding

Still looking for a read deck picture. BTW, I have my radio mounted on the bean-bag lap desk and it rides in the passenger seat or is tossed in the back if I have a passenger. The small lap desk and a long power card work great.

You can get a small metal plate to mount on the dash at a police/fire/EMS supply store. It is used to mount a "Kojack" light to the dash of an unmarked car, volunteer firefighters' POV, etc.

For a CB antenna, I bought a "no ground plane" antenna and threaded it through my cargo net (horizontally) in the trunk. Totally stealth and takes up no room. Range is only about a mile but that's enough for me to talk to other cars during cruises which is why I bought it. The blabbering on ch 19 forces me back to CDs after a few minutes.....

Neat link but I don't know how it would help with a 15 to 19 inch wip antenna. Looks like something that would be good for a radar detector.

I agree. I was thinking more along the lines of a GPS antenna. Don't have an answer for a 2 meter/440 Mhz, other than a thru glass antenna, unless you could mount the suction cups lower in the hatch area and mount a Mag Mount 1/4 wave. Foreget a 5/8 wave gain antenna.

My main goal was absolutely no outside whip; and a radio install that could be totally hidden

Here is what I did:
mikemercury.home.att.net/hamradio.htm

not the best performer, but the best I could do at the time with the goals I had set.

Mike Mercury: Your radio installation is really neat. I also like the external speaker but not sure of the inverted rubber-duckie antenna.

I'll have to take another look at this if and/or when I decide to mount a rig in the Vette. :yesnod:

Good job.
