Dash lights only come on when headlights are on
I'm having an issue with my instrument cluster lights. The behavior is this:
When I turn the key on, before I start the engine, the lights come on. Once the engine starts, the lights go out. However, when I turn the parking lights or the headlights on, the instrument cluster lights come back on.
I don't know if it matters, but the instrument cluster lights were replaced with an LED kit by the previous owner. I noticed this behavior shortly after I got the car, so I'm not sure if it was doing this before I bought the car or it just recently happened by coincidence. I'd like to fix this behavior because it makes it a little hard to see the speedo as I'm heading east in the mornings on my way to work.
Also, this may or may not be related, the HUD display does not work (I knew this before I bought the car, though, so no issue there).
I've checked both the fuse boxes and even replaced the turn signal stalk (since turning on the headlights made the dash lights come on), but no luck.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram that shows the instrument cluster lights being powered from two different circuits? One when the headlights are off, another when the headlights are on?

What's the multifunction switch?

This is the MFS. I had a similar issue but was able to repair mine based on some How To's on here. However, if I had to do it again (I may have to replace it anyway) I'd just get a new MFS.

I believe on US cars the cluster can come on when you open the door until starting but then I always believed they were off unless the running or head lights were turned on. On my car the cluster is only lit when the running or head lights are on.

Yeah, that's what mine is doing, too. So that's the normal behavior?

Same way my 04 works. When you open the door the dash light come on. When you turn on the key they go off. You turn on the parking lights or headlights they come back on. They also come on when you turn the dash light dimmer switch all the way clockwise past the click.
