Default After a month the PINGING is finally FIXED - Yippee

This has got to be a first, but it is good info for others having the same problem. My Vette has been to two different dealerships for repair with no success, until today. For PINGING :mad

See my other post for an update http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=329752

After total frustration and getting ready to sell it, the service manager called me today and said it was fixed. I asked what they repaired to cure the problem, and get this it was the STARTER. What was going on was the spring in the starter was weak and it was not retracting the starter gear all the way back. So under certain load conditions it was pinging on the fly wheel.

I am so happy :D :D , the Vette Gods came through for me. Now its time to start cruzing. :)

Also, I want to thank everybody that gave me suggestions on trying to cure the problem, I gave each and every suggestion to the service manager for review. Also, the service manager didn't even charge me a dime for the second visit (which included a new starter). Thank you -- everybody

Jammer,

Man, that is indeed great news. Guess ya found that determined tech that I mentioned in the other thread. My hat is off to him. That was good work on his part.

It's well known that an exhaust pipe making contact with the frame or a loose accessory bracket can hit against the engine and trigger the knock sensors, resulting in pulling out timing and ******* down the engine...but as I read your post it wasn't really pinging in the sense of detonation....but just a rattling sound caused by the starter drive gear striking the flywheel.

In any case, I sure am happy for ya. Enjoy the ride. About time, huh? Hang on to that dealership and that tech.

Good luck.

Congrats! Glad you didn't have to sell either

I know first hand that problems can arise that seem impossible to track down, and then finally (after great gnashing of teeth) you hit on something stupid like the starter spring. I remember a tick/tap on my Chevelle that i couldn't track down - i thought sure it was an exhaust leak or a valvetrain problem. Turned out to be a cracked flexplate!

Now get out there and cruise for chicks! :D
