Deep scratches removed from glass top
Hey guys, I know there are a few really good posts on how to fix up targa tops which have light scratches and hazing. Itallian33 has a great write up but I thought I would post how I fixed a clear targa roof which had deep scratches and scuffs...I would only suggest this technique if you are at the point where your going to fill the scratches and paint the top, otherwise, I would follow Itallian's post....
I bought this targa roof for 25 bucks because it actually went skidding across the road, scratched, hazed, scuffed ect... I had planned on painting it black but decided to see if I could fix it first. Here are the steps I took to revive this thing.
1. First I used 80 grit DA sand paper and sanded out the large scratches.
2. then I used 220 grit DA sand paper and sanded some more,
3. then I used 400 grit Wet DA sand paper and sanded,
4. then I used 600 girt wet sand paper with a hand block,
5. then i finished with 1000 grit wet sand paper.

this is what the top should basically look like before it is cleared.
(Ill dig up the original pic of how scratched it was)

this is what it looked like after one coat of clear (mix, not rattle can clear)

this is what it looks like on the car, clear and blue....

this is my car prior to the top,

Sweet work.
The clear top which came with my current C5 has what look like stress lines in one corner near the front latches. I wish sanding and clearing would work for those. And since I can't find a good condition body panel top right now, I may just have it painted.
But if I find an inexpensive sliced up clear one, I now know I have options so long as I have the spare time.

I'm considering just having a friend paint it and be done. May be a good winter project.
