Default Oil Pressure Gauge

Hi all, I have a freind with a sporadic Oil Pressure gauge and sporatic digital readins the the driver information cluster on his 2003. He's worried it could be the oil pump. Sounds more like a faulty oil pressure gauge to me. Any thoughts? Thanks.

The sending units are suspect on these cars. Have him replace the sending unit.

Change the sensor. PLAIN AND SIMPLE!

If you change it and you still have the same results,, look for problems elsewhere.

If the issues go away, your are back on the road!

It's easy enough to verify the problem by reading the oil pressure with a mechanical pressure gauge. There's a plug near the front of the engine where the actual oil pump pressure, before the oil filter, can be checked with a gauge setup.

Thanks. Where is the oil pressure unit located? Also, any suggestions on where to purchase the gauge? Thanks.

The engine oil pressure sensor is located directly behind the intake manifold. Lots of info in the forum thread archives about replacing or relocating the factory sensor.

You can purchase a pressure test gauge, with hose and adapter fittings, at most auto parts stores.

The sticky thread labeled Ultimate DIY thread has all the detail you will need.

Hi all. I'm getting ready to try to tackle the sporatic oil gauge problem on my friend's 03. I went to the dealership and they advised me there are actually 2 oil pressure sensors on the 03 Vettes. 1 of them is to the oil pressure gauge and the other to the computer in the car. I understand one to be on top of the engine and the other below near the oil filter and the one to control the oil pressure guage to be the one near the oil filter. I'm thinking this could be the one that is causing his gauge to be sporatic. Any thoughts? Thanks.

The EOP sending unit for the gauge is on the top of the engine. It's replacement is outlined in an extensive series of posts over the years here on the forum. See posts 2, 3, 6 & 7.

There are NOT 2 EOP sensors on your friend's car, nor any other C5 of any year. The sensor near the oil filter is NOT an engine oil pressure sensor. The "dealer" that told you this is wrong. Shocker. I would urge you to reward that level of incompetency by never setting foot on their premises again in the future.

The other sensor the "Stealership " is referring to is the oil temperature. It has nothing to do with the pressure reading. I, too, would not go near that " Stealership" , as they are totally inept to properly analyze a simple problem.
