PLEASE READ...GM HUSH ON 6 spd. Trannys!!!
Guys, I have a 2000 conv, 6 spd. 2 years ago I hit reverse gear while going for 5th gear. After that incident, It would not engage reverse gear completely, and spit reverse gear out while trying to back out of my garage. After the dealer checked a few items, my dealer overnited a new tranny and replaced it pronto. Ok , I thought my problems were over, but they are still here, and will always be here, and this applies to ALL 6 spd, owners. With my 2nd. new tranny, and 150 miles on it , I hit reverse again....I am 45 years old and have been driving sticks for 29 years, and never had a problem like this , especially with a $52,654 vette!!! There is a reverse safety solnoid valve which is supposed to lockout or inhibit getting into the reverse gate after 5 mph. I doesn,t work at all...If you don,t believe me shift from 4th to 5th in a fast manner and you will kiss reverse!!! So much for the safety solnoid . So now back to the dealer again, and now they won't replace the tranny...they rebuild it...new reverse gear and scyncros....all to no avail...same problem, now the dealer claims gm tech support cannot understand what to do next, and have no clue. I had the regional east coast service rep, Frank, call the vette engineers in Detroit and they tracked 3 c-5's to simulate this condition...a conv, a coupe and a hardtop...Guess what, they ALL kissed reverse..DUH....HELLO!!! They are clue-less and tell me that is NORMAL!!! They cannot help me and state we will now replace the shifter and ****...yea right!!!! I have a 2 + year outstanding claim with gm customer service, and it is just a song and a dance. So its off to the Lemon Law or Buy Back policy, or better business bureau,,,PS>>>according to gm there is no buy back policy!!! HUH??? GUYS< I need your input and support for this GM HUSH PROBLEM...Obviously GM is aware and will NOT recall ALL 6 spd .trannys since 1997 to present, for FINANCIAL reasons of course. perhaps with your support and input , I will open a can of worms and with my Attorney , and make this issue open to all owners!!! And to the corvette world. Any owners who hit reverse or have similar problems please respond and give your story too. We can only all benefit from this.
Thanks in Advance!!!

My reverse lockout works. I cannot move the shifter to the right of 5th and 6th, when in neutral, when the speedo is above a few MPH. It's caught me a few times, especially when I am rolling backward and trying to put the car in reverse (it does it for forward too, but I rarely attempt to go to reverse when rolling forward). Apparantly the car doesn't know if it's going forward or back :D

Re: PLEASE READ...GM HUSH ON 6 spd. Trannys!!! (2BADD-4U)
Over the last year this has happened to me two or three times. The last time it happened was when I was running at Pocono on Memorial Day. I went to shift into 5th going down the Long Pond straight and above all the engine and wind noise I could hear the gears clashing when I tired to push the lever into 5th. After I slowed down from 140+ to about 100 it would not duplicate the problem. The previous times it has done this on the highway when I was making a liesurely shift into 5th driving around town.

I have not had a problem with mine, not even a hint of something like this. I'll check it tomorrow, but I doubt I will get it to happen.
I wish you the best of luck getting this problem resolved. :)

Yes , numerous times, it is ok! :conSorry for the stupid question but, did they check the "safety solnoid"? Sounds like that is bad and not the tranny/shifter.

WOW  I go through the gears hard and fast (just how she likes it). Never had even a hint of the problem.

Heard about this before. The linkage to the reverse lockout solenoid falls apart and lands in a clear spot in the bottom of the tranny case causing reverse lockout to not work.
I've seen pictures on the forum.
Your dealer needs to get a clue, this isnt a hard problem to diagnose.

Hi there,
There is nothing wrong with the T56, as there are millions out there, and very few with this type issue.
As for your dealer, I can only apologize for them.
There has been a few issues, as connectors being switche, where the reverse lockout, has been substituted for the 1.4 skip shift. Also, there was a VME about incorrect sector shaft linkage not being installed correctly, at the transmission assembly plant.
While there is always constant quality improvement, a recall based on what???
Yes, issues have been there, but always taken care of by engineering.
Your dealership should start to use the resources granted us by GM to effectively fix the issue.
Oh, and just a sidebar, you can push past the reverse lockout, if the solenoid fails, with 24 lbs of force. This is designed into the solenoid.
Besttoyou, and a quick resolution to your issues, c4c5 :chevy

Re: PLEASE READ...GM HUSH ON 6 spd. Trannys!!! (c4c5specialist)
From C-5 TECH (corvtteguy@aol.com - http://www.corvetteforum.net/c5/c5_tech):
Question: Can you shift a C5 into reverse while in forward motion?
Answer: No, there is a reverse lockout, and it turns on when the car reaches 3 mph. It is a solenoid that is turned on by the PCM. Sometimes, it gets sticky, and does not work, and it definately is needed. Just so you donÕt get reverse when you are going to fifth. There is a code that will set for an out and out failure of the solenoid. However, if it doesnÕt totally slide the plunger out all the way, you will not get full engagement of the plunger. Therefore, you might be able to get reverse. Normally, during a clutch test, I check the solenoid, using a Tech 2. Other than that, just be cautious. Basically, what I do is to turn on the solenoid with the Tech 2, and then attempt a shift into reverse. If the shift is blocked, then the solenoid is ok. If the shift goes through, then the solenoid is sticky. Very simple test that takes about 15 mins. ThatÕs about it; all the service technician has to do is go to special functions. If you do start having problems with reverse, here is the Tech Tip of the day: The reverse gear, reverse idler, shift fork, and synchro can be replaced WITHOUT removing the trans from the vehichle on the C-5. I use a special GM socket, made specifically for the solenoid. Also, this is the same socket that we use for the 1.4 skip shift. You can go to http://www.spx.com (jeff.sheridan@servicesolutions.spx.com or diane.shavinski@servicesolutions.spx.com or 800-801-5420) for the purchase of this socket. Just reference the J tool number listed in your owners manual (This part is J41099 = Gear Select/Reverse Lockout Solenoid Socket). It is not easy to get to, but it can be done.

Re: PLEASE READ...GM HUSH ON 6 spd. Trannys!!! (2BADD-4U)
I had the identical problem. 100+ between 7 and 8 at Big Willow and hit reverse. However, I know I exerted more than 24lbs (running down a Porsche gets me pumped). Had the exact symptom. Would go in reverse, but popped out. General was kind enough to fix it and it works fine now.
Frankly, I think this was way more my fault than a design issue and it taught me a lesson in being smoother at the track rather trying to gorilla things (not saying that is what you did).
Good luck! :yesnod:

Shortened stock shifter (about 1") and never any problems. May be endemic to only certain cars

Yes, it has happened to me, I posted this on an other forum and was told I bent my shift rod, sometimes it grinds if when I engage reverse. I hope my Germany dealer replaces my trans. :(

Re: PLEASE READ...GM HUSH ON 6 spd. Trannys!!! (CPT Z06)
Another stupid question . . . Do you have CAGS installed? I think that the plug for the skipshift and the reverse lockout solenoids is the same. Could this be installed on the wrong plug?
Also, after my own misshift experience (missed 4th from 3rd and hit 2nd at about 100) and trying some after market shifters, I think you'll be much better off with a shortthrow shifter.
If you are a very powerful shifter (I recommend taking it easy), you can push past the solenoid. The stock shifter gives you so much leverage and so little feel that it isn't all that hard to misshift with.
I currently have the B&M and haven't hit the wrong gear yet with it, but it's stiff and notchy and beating me up so I'm trying the Hurst when it comes in . . .
