ticking sound coming from my C5
I've been listening to this sound for a while now, about 3000 miles. the car seems to run fine. i changed the oil today with Mobile 1 0W-30 and a M1-107 filter sound is still there. i have 78,000 on the clock and occasionally do some "spirited" driving. when i first start the car and drive i get a louder ticking for about 30 seconds, i dont believe its piston slap because it doesn't do it loud until i drive, then it quites down, right before the trans shifts i hear it more pronounced. the noise never goes completly away. check out this video, it is not much to look at, just listen. i was laying on my back under the car while it was on ramps. the noise is in the front of the engine near the harmonic balancer. it is barely auditable from above with the hood open.

I've heard the same report from a number of C5 owners - -one guy laid out five bills for a new harmonic balancer - - sound's still there.
Mine seems to quiet down quickly on cold start up - - I'm guessing smog pump - - everything else is in good shape at 60k miles . . .
Heck- my Lexus does the same thing and the dealership says "don't worry - - it's normal!" . . .

Here is a longshot --- check that you don't have a loose spark plug.
That would make a ticking noise like that. Also, check your serpintine belt for damage. Check the easy stuff first.

my oil pressures are fine hot and cold so i dont believe its the oil pump seal. my harmonic damper does wobble at idle, from what i've been researching that seems to be unacceptable. i just dont understand what would tick from a harmonic balancer. this weekend i'll pull the belts off and see what i find.

It's hard to tell from your video, but I think I have the same sound in my '01. Sounds almost like a faint staccato exhaust leak. Does seem to improve after car warms up. I also have a wobbly HB. Looking forward to hearing other ideas.

Sounds to me like the common LS sewing machine noise most lifters can
make. Some have had decent results by switching to Mobil 0w40 which
is a european spec blend that reduces (not eliminates) the clatter.
