Default drive 2hr, car dead, jump start, drive 2 hr, batt dead again????

took a nice 2hr Sunday drive, stopped, did some shopping for 1-2hr, got back to car and batt was dead, got a jump start, drove home 2hr, pulled into garage, shut it off, then tried to start, nothing but a click. While driving, showed charging at 13-14 volts, whats up guys??? Batt is 5yr old, dead cell?? Alternator?? When we left this morning, it started right up in the garage

It's the battery IMO. I'd take it and get it checked/replaced.

A five year old battery? If I have a 5 year old battery and goes dead twice for no apparent reason, it's replaced. I've even time replaced batteries at 4.5 years of age.

Battery isn't holding charge, replace it and you'll be good. First verify all connections are solid and clean

Battery is definitely a strong possibility but don't just throw parts at it... Have your battery load tested. It could also be the alternator...

Go to Advance Auto Parts. We'll load test your current battery (pun intended) and if it's bad, we'll install a new one....

I'm a little biased, as I work part time for Advance.

So you had a battery rated to last 75 months, and it actually exceeded it's rated life by one month....and you call that "planned obsolescence"?

While the battery has reached "that age." And a couple of deep discharges sure won't make it any happier, I think that I would be inclined to check for a quiescent draw, before replacing the battery and calling it a day. Perhaps something isn't going to sleep?

I'd check connections first. If the battery was bad , why would it start the next day ?

Did you ever pull out a VOLTMETER and check the battery? Looks like time has nothing to do with your problem, you could have driven as long as the car was running.

OP says it shows its charging 13-14 volts . I would say its the old battery. Have it tested free at Autozone.

I'm sure he was reading the DIC and not a voltmeter with the car OFF!!

Correct 3boystoys. If the DIC with car running is showing 13-14v then it is charging ok. Thats why I say its probably the battery. unless its a bad connection.

For what a battery costs, compared to the hassles being stranded could create, or the possible overload on the alternator, I wouldn't be taking any chances with the old one....

With my '01, battery replacement has been an every 3-4 year ritual since the car was brand new....
