Default Just changed tranny fluid and have grinded gears 3 times already..

As title states, I just changed the transmission fluid in my '01 Z06 with 48k miles.

I noticed an immediate improvement in the rowing of gears..much more silkier.

However: I've now grinded trying to go into a gear while driving around town three separate times. Not sure if it was any specific gear, and only one of the times was a spirited acceleration going into third gear. I've never had this happen before.

I used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.

:EDIT:

Car was level when I filled it. Shift box is and has been aligned. Problem hasn't happened again for the past few days, and was only evident the 2 days after the change.

How's the fluid in your clutch's master cylinder?

Perpetually dirty/dark despite doing the Ranger method on occasion..

I'm just worried that it's something to do with my fluid change...since it's never done it to me until then.

Let me ask another basic question...How much fluid did you put in?

I have found that I have to do the Ranger method every 3-4 weeks or so depending on how much or far I drive. It gets dirty pretty fast.

I found this unrelated to that, and more specifically to do with the tranny fluid change since it is only AFTER that procedure that this problem seems to have arose.

Making assumptions only leads to more problems, because it leaves possiblity on the table. No offense intended, but if you had the correct conclusions/answers, you would not be posting for help. Always give the forum members you solicit for help, the luxury of knowing everything you have done to the vehicle, whether you think it's related or not.

Yes. Consult your owners manual.

I would have but my manual is under the cover so I thought it would be quicker to ask. I only have 28k on my '01 and I haven't changed it yet.

Well, obviously that's enough fluid, and my question regarding the clutch master cylinder reservoir, was along the line that maybe you're not getting full actuation of the cylinder.

Maybe you could better describe what you mean by "grinding", while going into gear. OTOH, maybe with your perception of the shifts going a little easier, without realizing it, you're also not depressing the clutch as far as necessary.

Well, let's say I'm driving normally, revving no higher than 3K to shift, and randomly, while shifting into say third gear, the shifter doesn't go all the way into gear and so when I let off the clutch and give it gas it (pops out?) makes a loud grinding noise and I have to depress the clutch again and firmly put it back in gear. It has only happened 3 times, but that's a lot given that I've put 20K miles on my car since Christmas and have NEVER had that problem until I changed the fluid the other day. It's possible that I'm not depressing the clutch all the way or that I'm not firmly putting it into gear since I'm getting used to the easiness of the rowing due to the fresh fluid.. I'll keep an eye on it as I drive up to NC in a few moments.

How often are you suppose to change it? My trans works just fine at 28k so why change it if its not required?

I had to replace my trans and this was the only oil that my mechanic would use. This is from RP web site.

SYNCHROMAX – MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLUID

Synchromax is a manual transmission fluid that increases performance and the life of your equipment. It improves shifting, reduces gear noise and increases power transfer to the wheels. It also lowers operating temperatures and provides outstanding wear protection for longer transmission life.

Synchromax is recommended for manual transmissions that specify an automatic transmission fluid. It’s also ideal for 4×4 transfer cases and motorcycle gear boxes. Synchromax is fully compatible with all types of friction materials. It provides excellent corrosion and oxidation protection without affecting the soft metals commonly found in manual transmission synchronizers.

Synchromax is formulated with Royal Purple’s proprietary Synerlec technology for unsurpassed performance and protection.

I'm very interested to hear experiences of those using Syncromax. Does Amsoil make something that is suitable for our tranny's?
