Default Help! Doing a C6 Z06 Brake conversion on my 2000 Base C5

Hey, I am having some issues. I recently got the complete C6 Z06 brakes from GM and yesterday went to go bolt it all on, when i mounted everything up I noticed That the brake pads actually sit more than 1/4 inch off the outside of the rotor. I noticed one other person who posted pictures of there car and you can see the wear on the rotor is not where it should be (too far out)

Everyone says these brakes are (plug and play) so i want to find out if there is something different about my car. I cant be the only one that notices this. To me it would seem that the bolt hols on the knuckles are out slightly further than the C6 Z06.

I only put on the fronts, i have not tried the rears yet. I really hope someone has had this problem and fixed it. I don't know if i need to get C6 knuckles, or if they the C6 knuckles will even bolt the the C6, also if that would change the geometrics of the suspension, and would the C5 wheels bearing bolt into the C6 knuckle.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Are the pads in upside-down? The tab on the pad should point out, towards the outside of the wheel.

The C6 and C5 knuckles have the same dimensions.

Did your "complete kit" include the C6 Z06 rotors? The C6Z rotors have a larger diameter than the C5 (or C6 base) rotors.

Based on some of your earlier posts - you are likely also going to have wheel clearance issues..........

Your statement about the C6 and C5 knuckles was true until the 2009 model-year. With the introduction of the ZR1 Corvette engineers beefed up the C6 knuckle:

The C5 knuckle is on the left and the 2009+ C6 knuckle is on the right. In addition to beefing up the web between the two caliper anchor bolts, the Corvette engineers shortened the steering arm.

I recently completed the installation of C6 ZR1 carbon-ceramic brakes on my C5 Z06. Here is a pictue of the front knuckle assemblies with the C6 knuckles and the ZR1 calipers attached:

My installation was a direct bolt-on. All I needed to do after the installation was to have the frontend realigned.

Good luck with your conversion.

The pictures are all nice and pretty but it doesn't really help if the hub and brake mounting points didn't change.

I'd have to go with Its_Go_Time and recommend you re-check the installation.

Also, the C5 knuckle to caliper bracket bolt is single use/torque to yield and should not be used to attach the C6 Z06 Caliper to the C5 knuckle. The C6 Z06 caliper to knuckle bolts are the same size and can be re-used.

Wow Thanks everyone for there replies. Really apreciate it.
I actually work for a gm dealer, I ordered The C6 Z06 Brake Pads, Rotors, Calipers, And even new Bolts and washers. But just my luck i believe i used the vin number from an 09 Z06.

I am going to check with parts to see if the caliper part numbers changed from 2008 to 2009.

Yes i installed the pads correct

I Have the C6 Z06 Replica wheels In 18" and 19"

Just checked with parts, and Pumba was right the C6 Z06 Calipers are form 2006-2008 In 2009 they changed. now it doesnt say why. But thank God i have the part number for 2006-2008 i am going to install them later today and take some pictures.

I am still stumped though of why the pad was stucking out hopefully the car gods are in my favor and it will bolt up right today.

Pictures to follow

F***!!!!!! so turns out my C6 Z06 Replica wheels are all but thaT REPLICAS. they dont clear my front wheels, but they do clear on the rear, also the rear calipers and pads are perfect on the rear. Along with the wheels clear no problem.

Judging by those pics, the pads are sitting in the calipers properly. I just took a peek at mine and the tabs on the pads stick up about .125-.150" above the caliper. It also looks like the exact same rotor as mine, but I would meaure the diameter just to make sure (I believe it should be 355mm). So...unless there is something wrong with those pads, your caliper must be out of position. I noticed on mine that the the distance between the OD of the rotor and the webs on the caliper is about the same as the amount the tabs poke past the caliper. How does yours compare to this?

You should measure your rotors (as mentioned above).

Front Rotor Sizes (inches):
C5: 12.9 x 1.25
C6 base: 12.9 x 1.25
C6 Z51: 13.4 x 1.25
C6 Z06: 14.0 x 1.25

Looks like you might have the C6 Z51 rotors.....

You may have seen my post. I just installed these last month and have a big thread about it. Those tabs are the only thing that protrude from my rotors. I think you may have gotten a smaller diameter.

So to do this conversion on a C5 and it be a bolt on kit you need 2006-2008 calipers?
Getting ready to do this myself..
Thanks

Push the pads against the rotor and take some more pics. You've got a pic of the pad backed off from the rotor and it's difficult to see this hangover you're talking about. To me, they look like they'll be be at the edge of the rotor once pushed against it.

Odd, when I did a quick Z06 brake parts search at GMpartshouse and PartsTaxi, both sites came up with $150 calipers for '09 and '10 while the '08 calipers were $357 and $400. Something is screwy there.

Looking at those spindle pics it appears the new ZR1 spindle is just beefier in the caliper mounts but the bearing and caliper mounting dimensions are still the same.

Thank you everyone that mentioned the rotors. I was going to measure them today and realized there was a easier way, i went to parts and looked up the number, They somehow ordered me the wrong rotors for the front only, They ordered the C6 heavy duty (J55 RPO Code) and not the C6 Z06 (J56 RPO code) could not be happier! so i am ordering the right ones And Will reinstall the brakes Again.

And Again Thank you So Much everyone. This is truly the reason for Forums, when you cant step back and look at it yourself.

Ya It is a direct bolt on, looks like it needs different brake hoses because the hoses mount in a different location on the caliper. but i will let you know.
