Default Fuel Issue

Help! Need some ideas.

Driving on the interstate last night when the car started to sputter and stall. At first I thought I had run out of gas. I knew it was low but should have had 30 to 50 until dry.

Put 10 gallons of fuel in car but to no avail. Engine would not stay running and barely would get to 500 RPM before a stall.

My first reaction is either the fuel filter or pump. I know this is an issue on a C5 (2003 50th). Can anyone give me any troubleshooting advice prior to draining the tank and removing the left muffler, etc.?

Thanks!

Yep. Use a gauge to check fuel pressure at the rail.

What does RPO stand for and its significance?

Could also be water in the fuel (bad fuel),or the fuel pump.

Thanks for your thoughts. I worked through various tests, including fuses, relays and pressure on the fuel rail. No pressure at all which brings me to a conclusion that sounds like a faulty pump. I elected to punt and took it to the dealer as I am limited without a lift and large enough garage. I am hoping there is something I missed as the fuel pump and related work is estimated at $1500-2000.

Did you at least try jumpering the socket for relay 35?

RE: Jumpering

In lieu of jumpering, I switched another relay and held my finger on it to feel the click. This assured me that I had isolated it to the gas tank.

Ok....guess it doesn't matter at this point.

Good luck

The ISSUE is not keeping gas in the car............
Apparently you are one of those people who like to drive vehicles until the low fuel light comes on, and/or down to 1/8 tank,

If it is your fuel pump, then you helped it's demise. As known, the fuel pump is in the tank, it is COOLED by the fuel, low fuel exposes the pump to the air, no fuel to cool it, the pump gets hotter then it should, then slowly fails. Expensive way to cheap out on putting gas in your car..................................Jus t had my wife's co-worker go the same route in her Infinity, her habit was to drive all the time on 1/4-1/8 tank or lower, usually until the light came on, then guess how much further she could travel before she really needed to add gas. Fuel pump dead as a doornail. Replaced fuel pump=cost of gas for a year.........

The lesson for today,,,,,,,is put gas in your car or pay for it later...

This issue was the fuse block above the tank. Apparently it was shorting. The tank had almost eight gallons in it. Obviously, the exhaust, the left tank all had to be removed. Since all had to come out anyway, I replaced the pump assembly as well. $2000 later, it is running smooth again.

Thanks for the ideas.

LOL, I guess I was too tired to write. I meant the wiring harness had to be replaced. I had no continuity to the pump even trying to bypass it.
