Official refill capacity after oil change
Hi there,
After a number of debates at the local car shows, different forums and the like, the official word has been released from GM.
6.5 quarts after an oil change, is what should be added.
You will NOT see a full mark, unless the vehicle sits over night. Fluid drainback can take up to 5 hours.
You are looking for the oil level to be within the hash marks on the dipstick.
If you install 7, your oil will aerate, and be consumed by the PCV system of your engine.
I hope this helps quell the debate, as this is the official word on this.

Great news, C4C5specialist. Can you provide a link to the announcement so I can print it, frame it and hang it over the mantle.
Seriously, where can one get the full GM admission?
TIA

Re: Official refill capacity after oil change (Patches)
Hi there,
If you look in your owners manual, the quantity is listed right there.
This was always in the manual, I have found that alot of people just do not read it.

Could you tell me which dealership you work with? I'm in the Danbury area and it would be nice to know of a good dealership I can take my Vette to.
Thx!

>>>I have found that alot of people just do not read it.<<<
Why is that, I wonder. I always read the owners manual and always find things I wouldn't have known otherwise.
Sometimes things aren't there that maybe should be. For example:
There is nothing in the climate control section that explains how to set up the auto dual zone for a vent mode. (ambient outside air flowing through the vents) It does talk about the flow through ventilation but not a true vent mode.
I found that if you press the a/c button to turn off the compressor (a/c light off) set the temperature control to 60 and manage how much air you want with he fan, it will pull air through the vents at outside, ambient, air temp.

Re: Official refill capacity after oil change (2k2C5)
IMO, the 6.5 quarts is correct provided the changee knows how to get the last 1/2 quart out. According to other posts, raising the rear end after the oil stops draining will yield the last 1/2 quart. I let the dealer change my oil last week to avoid possible warranty hassles and they only put in 6 quarts. Dip stick was normal the next morning. I'm not to concerned as that remaining 1/2 qt. of Mobil 1 had only been in for 3200 miles. At least they knew enough to use Mobil 1. I sure wish the drain were at the back of the oil pan so it would drain right out after jacking the front end to get underneath. :smash:

I usually let my oil drain for about 20 minutes. This seems to be enough time to completely drain all of the oil. I put in 6 1/2 quarts of oil. The following morning, the oil level is right on the full mark.

I still think that GM "hosed" up the redesign of the dipstick and dipstick tube for the '01/'02 models. For those models, oil reading halfway between the ADD and MAX lines is "full" (with a 6.5 qt refill, including filter change). :yesnod:

C4C5 ... you're opening a can of worms here. I'm confused. When I picked up my car, with 3 miles on the ODO, before I ever even started it I checked the oil and it was at the FULL mark (top of the hashed area). When I changed the oil (butt high, drained for at least 2 hours) it took 7 quarts to bring it back to that same level. Are you telling me that GM over-filled it at the factory? By the way, I DO read the manual (service and shop) and know that GM says 6.5 ... it's just that I was born in Missouri (Show Me) and trust what I see more than what I hear. Should we be keeping the oil level in the middle of the hashed area? Please advise.

Almost sounds like the 6.5 value is based on a short drainback time (change at the dealer will not allow extended drain times) so that the pan isn't overfilled after. The right answer sounds like the full line with a cold and level motor so I will stick with that as the right answer.

My 2000 takes 6.75 the bring it to the full mark (after overnight), everytime I changed it (backend higher).
By the way, my oil line (on the stick) is at an angle. No one's really mentioned this before, but I assume that's normal.

Re: Official refill capacity after oil change (Number six)
Do you think that GM will recall and change out over 50,000 dipsticks? Of course not. When they re-designed the dipstick for the '01(and '02) year model they screwed up. They are not going to admit it...something as basic as a dipstick (people would then really worry about some of the other engineering changes they made and wonder...oh, oh...what else could they have miscalculated). You can clearly see the position and length of the dipsticks in the '01 and '02 are different from the '97-'00 models.

Hi there,
As I stated, you will NOT see a full mark.
If you do NOT like what is being said, my apologies, however, this is the GM stance, and also, there is a TSB for incorrect dipsticks a while back.
As I am sure you all know.
While nothing is perfect, each design comes with its own set of circumstances.
If this cannot be understood, I am sorry.
6.5 it is, nothing more, nothing less, without doing anything other than normal drain and filter change.

If 6.5 is GM's official stance, I wonder why they put 7 qts. in mine and many others. Granted there is no FULL mark on my dipstick, there is an ADD mark and a MAX mark and it takes exactly 1 qt. to fill from one to the other. My car had 6 miles on it when I bought it and the oil level was at the MAX mark. On the first oil change I lifted the car level and drained the oil, then lifted the rear another 12 inches and alot more oil came out. I then measured the amount that came out and it was just shy of 7 qts. (if you consider the amount still in the filter material and the amount coating my drain pan, it would have been exactly 7 qts.) I put the car back on the ground and it took exactly 7 qts. to bring the level up to the MAX mark. I would therefore assume that if GM's stance is 6.5 they must expect that for a NORMAL DRAIN, the car will be lifted level and that 1/2 qt. of dirty oil will be left in the engine.

Re: Official refill capacity after oil change (c4c5specialist)
Hi there,
After a number of debates at the local car shows, different forums and the like, the official word has been released from GM.
I hope this helps quell the debate, as this is the official word on this.

c4c5specialist,
glad to hear from you again! I've always been O.K. with the 6.5 it says to fill with in the owners manual.
Did GM every redesign the PCV system on the LS1?
