C5 TECH do you recommend using fuel injector cleaner, ever???
I know that everyone says don't use snake oil like slick 50 in your engine, fine. What about fuel injector cleaner that you pour into your gas tank? Does that stuff work? Any possible bad side effects? Do fuel injectors become clogged over time, like you see in the commercials, and the 'fuel injector cleaner' really opens them up, thanks.

I've been using good, name brand gasolines that say "detergent" for the last 12 years in all my family's cars and have not been using bottled cleaners. So far, lots of miles and no problems. :yesnod:

I would just save my money and then replace my fuel injectors at every 50K to 75K miles. :D The cost is probably end up to be the same, but you are getting a brand new set of injectors.

I had a flaky idle problem on my 2000 C5 and took it into the dealershipt to have it fixed. They adjusted the PCM calibration for the idle BUT the tech also recommended having the fuel injectors cleaned. My car is just shy of 33K miles and I asked why should they be cleaned now, shouldn't they be good for 100K miles?? He said they can get gummed up anyway and cleaning them out usually fixes the type of idle problems that I was having. I didn't want to pay for the service (89.95 is a rip IMHO) but if it fixes the idle then so be it. Part of the service included putting a bottle of 44K in the tank so they use those kinds of additives in their normal injector cleaner service so it can't be all that bad. My idle is now all good so I guess I will swallow the cost and be happy that my car doesn't try to die every down and then.

Chevron "techtron" BEFORE each oil change does the trick for me. I heard it is best to do it right before your oil change, so if any fuel w/ the "Techtron" washes into your oil, it is rinsed out w/ the change.

Techs at two different dealerships in my area recommended the GM Fuel Treatment for occasional use, they said it is the same as the Chevron stuff.

I use the Slick 50 gasoline additive some of the time and the Techron other times. My thought is the same as with changing to different gasoline brands, to get a wider variety of additives to clean all the gunk out of the engine.

Just wondering, if your fuel filter is working, why would the fuel injectors get clogged up?

I KNOW that I read a thread on this forum a while back where everybody said NOT to use ANY of that stuff.
My 2000's only got 7500 miles on it but pretty soon I'm going to buy one of those kits (like from Eckler's) and do a cleaning...myself.

Gasoline has several different chemicals and solvents in its composition ( I actually believe it is over 100). Some of these chemicals, under varying conditions, create a gummy varnish like residue. This is what clogs our stuff up.
Not all of the components in Gasoline are meant to be combustible some are for lubrication, detergency, emissions etc.......
Like I said IMO.
Thanks

A friend of mine has an oil distributorship and he says that all fuel comes through the pipeline the same.
It's where they fill the tankers, that move fuel to gas stations, where they add the stuff that makes is 93, 91 octane or what ever brand specific stuff the oil companies want to add that makes their gas better than the next guy's.
fuel injector cleaner, or detergent is added to all major gasoline brands. The guy that runs dirt cheap gas doesn't have it, that's why it's cheaper.
Believe me if I thought for a second that my injectors were in the least bit restricted I would be all over the fuel additives...but they are in every tank I burn.
I'll save that expense and use it towards more brake pads & rotors!

44K is the way to go. It is one of the three steps used by service centers to clean the fuel injection system. This stuff works great. But, some shops may not sell it to you over the counter. It is usually about $20 a can. If you get some, be extemely careful adding this to your fuel tank. If you even get a little on your paint, you will :cry .
