Default Why are 97-00 headers different from 01-04

I noticed that when looking at headers on vette sites that there are different part numbers depending on if its pre00 or 01 after.
What changed in the car for there to be different headers?

on 97-00 the dipstick tube is attached to the actual header. on 01 plus it is attached to the head. Also the AIR tube coming off of the header is in a different spot. All can be worked around.

I have the 01-04 headers in a 99. My solution was to move the air tube from #6 exhaust and reweld it to #8. I think this can be disabled in the ecu, but it still has to be sealed off with some kind of block off plate.

I also rewelded the dipstick mounting tab to attach to the head.

It is much easier to buy the right part than do all the crap I did, but the vendor didn't have the correct header at the time.

That is definitely scratching your butt by reaching over your head. The new dipstick and tube is like 15 bucks and fits right up. You can also put in a longer rubber tube and use the 01+ AIR with no welding necessary. Or just do like me and buy headers that dont have the AIR fitting and remove the whole system. (no emissions in FL)

The primary difference in the two stock headers, 97-00 and 01-04, beyond the dipstick issue, is that the early headers were double wall stainless steel and the later headers cast iron. At the time, it was stated that the cast headers were more efficient but I suspect it was a dollars issue and those originals were just too expensive to manufacturer.

The thread is about differences in headers........not exhaust manifolds.

The basic difference in the LT headers is just the AIR routing of the different years--

However the main difference in the STOCK exh manifolds are
the older ones have a different collector ANGLE than the newer ones do--and won't line up---

I don't know about using a rubber tube. Headers get pretty hot.

Oh yeah, I'm a butthead so reaching over my head to scratch my butt is normal.

I thought the AIR system was the only difference

Any idea where I can find this at? I have a 99 C5 and a set of 01+ headers ready for install.

The early models had a pup cat and a regular cat and the later ones from 02 on had only one cat

The stock system I pulled off my '98 only had 2 cats and the dipstick bolted to the passenger manifold.

The air tubes use rubber sections anyways so a piece of hose kept back from the header a bit should be OK.

I just spent about 15 minutes and reshaped my dipstick tab so it bolts to the blocked off air tube fitting on my passenger header. Quicker than even finding the dipstick p/n to buy another one.

You're right. I shouldn't breeze through the initial post next time. Thanks,

Look again at the drivers side of your "all metal" air tubing...
