I just returned from the drag strip. While attempting a burnout, the car just stumbles. I put it in neutral and rev it, it's fine. I place it back in first or third and the stumble comes right back. Yes, the traction control was turned off...

This has happen on several occasions. I never know when it's going to happen. I have a few mods on the car. However, this happened even when it was stock.

Do you think the traction control is over riding the off switch? So, of course,
without a burnout and add the stumbling on to the take off, the car comes out slow. Within a few feet, the car runs great?

Any ideas or comments greatly appreciated. Thanks

Next time turn active handling off and try your burnout.

Both active handling and traction were turned off with the same switch. Would it work better in competitive mode?

A faulty brake switch can cause this :yesnod: Does your cruise control intermittently cut out on you on the high way???

No problem with the cruise control. It seems like the car is flooded. When it happens, I can't muster enough power to start a burn out. Then when I pull up to the staging lights, it does the same thing. It takes off very slowly and the power will finally kick in.

No problems with my 98 A4...although I don't have the competition mode, so all I have to do to smoke my tires is turn off the traction control. :yesnod:

My traction control sometimes stayes ON though it shows that it is off.
That happens sometimes!!
My car then stumbles on the burnout.
I always have to switch it on and the off again, when that happend.

I´m glad I always do a burnout bevore the 1/4 runs, I wouldn´t be happy if the traction control kicks in during spraying NOS :(

If you have a Generation I Active Handling car (late 1998-2000), and turn off Traction Control while leaving Active Handling engaged (Competitive Driving mode), and attempt to powerbrake, the car will appear to stumble because it will actually downpower itself as the car attempts to lunge against the brake. This will NOT happen if your car is 2001+ (second generation Active Handling system). You can powerbrake the second generation system cars. This is just an anomaly of the first generation system.

So this will always happen no matter what ? It seems like my car will bog or shudder when I try to power brake it for launch, and this happens as low as 1k RPM :(

This is the same thing that has been happing to me. It did it again this past weekend. One foot the brake on on the gas and NOTHING :confused:

I noticed you have a 2001, therefore a second generation Active Handling system. Hold your Active Handling button down for about 5-6 seconds until Competitive Driving comes up on your DIC. Active handling will now be engaged but Traction Control will be off. You should now be able to powerbrake the car.
A car with first generation Active Handling (late 1998-2000) must turn off both Traction Contol AND Active Handling in order to powerbrake.

When you hit the button doesn't that turn both of them off? If so then I had both of them off.

I'm going to crawl out on a limb here and make a WAG. :D

Some observations...

1) Folks are reporting everything's okay for the first few, then problem.
2) Folks seem to have AHS and/or TC off.
3) The A4 uses a set of adaptable parameters.
4) Folks seem to be doing burnouts with the gear selector in a gear range that allows shifts (i.e., D, 3 or 1.)
5) Folks aren't reporting any other signs of transmission related troubles.

My wild guess is that some interesting things are going on with the adjustable parameters. I've no idea what the majority of these parameters do. Anybody doing burnouts with the gear selector in 2 (which holds 2nd gear so no shifts during burnout)? Do you have the same issues? Anybody have any scantool traces from passes like these?

Well, I'm glad I started this post. It seems like others out there are experiencing some of the same symtoms I've observed.

I will try the competitive mode next time and see if this solves the problem.

The funny thing about this is that it doesn't happen everytime? However, last time out, it happened two times in a row. After the second time, I headed home.

I have an '01 coupe with an automatic trans. I have noticed since the beginning that my car will fall on it's face (serious hesitation, more like turning off the fuel) during relatively hard acceleration, ie, passing a car on a 2-lane road. It really falters at about 90 mph, 3/4 to wot. I believe the active handling and TC are both on. Is this related to the active handling system as well? :confused:
