The Battery Question again...2004 Z06
I have a 2004 Z06 Z16 and the battery went dead. I have a few questions. Where can I get an AC Delco Battery ? (other than Dealer) The car is still under an extended warranty, will using another brand of battery void warranty?
I disconnected the battery without doing anything with the security of the radio, how do I reset the radio when I put the new battery in? Thanks, Jzvette

Go to the AC Delco website and do a retailer search. I highly doubt that your warranty would be voided by a battery switch...

Thanks for the info. I do not know if a security code was set, I'm the 3rd owner, car wasn't driven much at all with only 2800 miles on it. I guess I will find out if there was a security code when I connect the new battery.
Pep Boys doesn't carry AC Delco here in PA. So I guess it's the dealer. I tried to get a Optima but no one carries the right size for my car(tried Autozone, Advanced, and Pep Body no luck.
If my radio is locked and I don't know the security code, how do I unlock it??
Where can I get and Optima and what specs do I need to get?

Advance should be able to do an "internal supply order" for you. If not, try Jegs or Summit Racing.

Here ya go! The RADIO UN LOCK Procedure````
The
following procedure will give you a new code that you can use instead of
your personal code. Using this new code, you can unlock your radio and
then re-lock it with a new code if you
wish.
Prerequisites:
The radio must be in LOC mode NOT in INOP
mode.
Let me explain. If you have activated the Theft-Deterrent
feature of your radio and loose power, the radio goes into LOC (theftlock)
mode. With the ignition on, you must use the MN and HR buttons to enter
you personal code in order to unlock it (The instructions are on page 3-27
in your Y2K Owners manual). If you fail to enter the correct code eight
(8) times, the radio goes into INOP mode. You have to wait an hour with
the ignition on before the radio returns to LOC mode (go for a long drive
somewhere).
Procedure:
01. Turn the ignition ON (The radio
displays LOC)
02. Hold down the Radio Presets 2 and 3 buttons for six
seconds
03. The radio display changes from LOC to a three-digit number.
Write this number down. Dont take forever, fifteen seconds max before the
next step.
04. Press the AM/FM button
05. The radio display changes
to another three-digit number. Write this number to the right of the first
one.
06. You now have a six-digit number, the first three digits are
from STEP 03 and the last three digits are form STEP 05
07. Call 1 800
537 5140
08. Press 1 then # (pound). Youll hear Invalid Code, try
again
09. Press 139010 then # (pound). You will be asked to enter your
four or six digit code followed by * (start)
10. Enter the number from
STEP 6 then * (star)
11. Listen to the four-digit number and write it
down. It will be repeated twice
12. Turn the ignition ON (The radio
displays LOC)
13. Use the MN and HR buttons to enter the code from STEP
11
14. Press the AM/FM button. The radio display changes to
SEC
Your radio is now un-locked and usable. The Theft-Deterrent
feature is STILL active! If you want to disable it, use the instruction on
page 3-27 in your Y2K Owners manual. Use the code from STEP 11 instead of
your personal code.
Note: This tip originated from LOTZAHP, Austin
TX (credit must be given where credit is due). I verified it on an Y2K C5
with a locked radio - mine.

I saw the Red Top Optima at Sam's Club for $139 today.

Get Sams 78N for $69 SKIP THE OPTIMA
Been using the Sams 78N battery for several years. Works fine.
Half the price of the Optima. See many complaints here on Optima batteries. PS the Sams battery has a 7 or 8 year warranty with free replacement for the first 36 months.

The last regular battery that I bought at Sam's leaked within 6 months and damaged my A/C vacuum lines. Cost more to have fixed than a new Optima. Replaced with an Optima which is going strong after 6 years.

The AC Delco Professional is an excellent battery. I have one and I have no doubt it'll give me 7 years at least. It does cost less than an Optima.
Another very good battery is the Costco Kirkland battery. At $60 it represents the best bang for the buck. My son's Kirkland was 6 and a half years old when we replaced it. It was still starting his car every day but I decided to be proactive and swap it out.

Using the high end batteries doesn't really gain you much these days. I'm running a Walmart battery. The old one died when I was nearby so that's what it got 3 years ago. Works as good as any other battery and is cheap with a decent warranty too.

I would not bother buying an Optima for either of my other two cars. However, after two leaking conventional batteries, the only way I would go back to a regular battery, in my Vette, would be if I changed the battery cables to a top connection configuration. Both of my other conventional batteries leaked from the side terminals.

There are literally thousands of side-terminal battery C5 owners out there who are buying non-AGM batteries since 2004 (AC Delco produced AGM batteries from 01-03) and who have never had any leaking issues. Many of the newer batteries are made by Johnson Controls and have much more robust cases.
I can understand why you are reluctant to buy a non-AGM battery but based upon the lack of leaking reports in this forum (General and Tech sections), I'd say non-AGMs built after 2004 are very safe.

Any decent batt is pretty damn good these days, imo...
I would rec'd putting your new batt on a low amp trickle type charger or "maintenance charger", eg Battery Tender/CTek, for a full day or more.
The batts they sell at nearly any joint, have either been sitting for awhile or the checkout jockey gave it a hot high amp charge.
You want to bring your new batt up to full snuff, slowly, before installing, imo.

Is it a good idea to have engine running when installing a new battery?
A mechanic friend does it this way to keep any settings .(unless battery is already totally dead)
Seems like no big deal to keep positive terminal from shorting when doing this.
yes/no/ ?

With that type of advice, I think he is neither a mechanic....or a friend.....
