Default Just bought my first VETTE!!!

Just bought my first vette, it is a 2000 millennium yellow with 34000 mile on it. After reading these forums I am glad i bought it BUT also scare of all the issues I read about... First issue has come up. When I start it up I have a wine that last about 4 minutes then goes away. What it is is the starter stays engaged after it warms up it stops. What is it the starter?? wiring? is this a common thing? What about fixes?

First off, congrats and I know you will enjoy the ride and this FORUM

An un-written rule is that you HAVE TO post pics of your ride.....get with it man !!

I am unaware of the starter problem you describe. I would pay close attention to it, consult some local mechanics and be patient before you decide to repair. The Corvette Tax is high sometimes, and the more impatient you are, the higher the tax.

Congrats and enjoy

When I turn it off before it warms up the starter continues to turn the flywheel. I am 99% it has something to do with the starter. The weather sucks here and I havent took any pics yet but will as soon as I get the chance.

Ok. From what I could make out of your initial post, you had two issues. The wining sound for 4 minutes is consistent with the AIR pump running, which will run from start up....for a maximum of 4 minutes.

I don't see how the starter could stay engaged, if you are driving the car...as I would think it would destroy it. Really need more info here.

OK....Let me do this again. When I start the car up cold and then turn it off immediately with out letting it warm up like backing it out of the garage the starter continues to turn the flywheel...if I turn the key back on it fires right back up. If I let it run and the noise goes away I can turn it off, restart and no noise. I called dealer and have it scheduled to go in in the morning but the roads are bad and salty after today so I will wait to take it in.

This is my first and I am reading and trying to find out the most I can about these.

is it a high pitched squeaking or a high pitched whining.

It could be either the ac assembly pulley possibly the belts hard to guess.

Congrats on the purchase of the machine and wave when you see a fellow vette owner it is part of the international club sign.

it is more of a grumbling noise/ rattling.....kind of hard to explain I guess. Like I said it goes away after it warms up. I can then turn off the car and the strter will not turn the flywheel.

You either have a BAD/STICKING STARTER SOLENOID or the Theft Deterrent Relay (TDR) is sticking in the energized condition. Do you have an AUTO or MN6?

The TDR is in the passengers foot well and mounted on the fire wall:

Its the relay with FOUR wires RED PURPLE, Yellow and Yellow/Black stripe.

You can call me and I will provide you some more assistance if you desire PM SENT. You don't need no stinking STEALERSHIPS!

Think of it as a feature...auto-restart
I agree with what Bill said, something is keeping your started energized.

Heres some insight on whats happening. For the starter to RUN,,,the SOLENOID needs to energize and make contact with the TWO main contact points inside the solenoid. Those are the battery positive contact and the contact for the main starter power contact. If that contactor sticks, the starter will run on.

The other cause of run on is the main B+ contacts inside the Theft deterrent relay arc closed or stick. This will cause the starter motor to run on also.

The ignition switch can also cause it to run on BUT,,,,,it will/should stop when you shift into gear (AUTOMATIC TRANS) or release the clutch off the clutch safety switch.
