Default cracked rear rims

Took tires off my 2001 vette and see small cracks starting from the outside working there way in. About 4 or 5 per wheel.

These are speedline rims.

Question is - not sure how long they have been there or if will they get worse. How much should I worry about them. Should I mount new tires to them, I dont race or go faster than hiway speeds.

I would of never known till the tires came off.

What do you think.

If they are the thin spoke wheels I would replace them. They are known to crack and will most likely get worse with time. Photos would help with ID'ng.

You should get those replaced ASAP. I wouldn't ride on cracked rims.

How many people riding around with cracked thin spoke rims, bet there are lots. Never would of known as they are small and on inside of rear rims only but they are through the thickness of the rim.

Question is - should I be worried, how many with speedline rims have actually blown apart?

Excuse me, you have wheels cracked THROUGH the rims at FOUR OR FIVE PLACES PER WHEEL and you want to know "how many with speedline rims have actually blown apart?" !!!!!

DON'T USE THE WHEELS UNLESS YOU WANT TO COMMIT SUICIDE.

Yes, this is correct, how many have blew apart. I wonder. If these have hairline cracks about one inch long , how many others are the same and have not had any issues.

I would of never known if they were on the car.

Default Cracked Rim Pix, questions, & WTB

1.) WTB 50th Anniversary front rim. Any sellers?
2.) One crack as shown. Anybody ever have one repaired?
3.) These are aluminum alloy, right?
4.) Would TIG repair would be best?
5.) Repaired rim acceptable for grandpa street use?
6.) Do you think the crack was created when the rim weight was hamered on?

I would think hitting a pot hole could cause a rim to crack like that. Install or removal of balance weights would not have caused the crack. You really need to replace that wheel, LIKE YESTERDAY! Good luck.

Seen pics before of the aftermath of rims blowing apart (this was at the lug nut area and not on a vette), it was not pretty , get some new rims from JW Motoring, he has the best deals around.

Unless you want to use your prepaid funeral expenses DON'T DRIVE ON ANY WHEEL WITH CRACKS LIKE THAT.

I had a slow leak on one of my wagon wheels. Couldn't see anything looking at the wheel from the outside. Demounted wheel and saw crack on inside rim. Immediately replaced it and checked all other wheels too.

I've had blowouts and a steel wheel rust thru and actually fail with the car PARKED. Being lucky is better than being stupid and driving on something which can cost your and others lives. Get scrap value for the aluminum after replacing any and all cracked wheels no matter how small the cracks are.

Remember the Electras? Tails fell off from metal fatigue.
Ditch those wheels before you land in the hospital or worse.

There are wheel shops that are certified to repair damaged wheels. The question is,,,, why did it crack in the first place??

Grand Pa driving What happens when your grand pa driving at 70 mph and you have to swerve to avoid an accident and the wheel self destructs?

Be careful.

Default Cracked Rim Repair

See rim repair pix. One crack:
$20 - Break, remount, balance tire
$40 - Rim repair. Cut slot, TIG weld, rough grind, spray paint. (For show, more grinding, sanding, & painting would be required).

This repair should hold. I will post if any problems in future.

We have a welding shop and regularly tig weld cracked wheels
mostly for the car rental companies.
Provided it is done right there will be no problems.
