from my 2002 service manual after removal from the door,
1. Push in on one edge of the mirror glass tilting the mirror case to allow finger access
2. Grasp the glass case firmly and pull the case from the mirror body.
3. Disconnect the wire connectors from the case.(heated mirror)

I happen to have a replacement mirror that I picked up from the dealer today. I cracked my passenger mirror reinstalling it. ~$85 GM list. When you reinstall, use the palm of your hand in the middle of the glass.

Like the service manual says, push in on the lower inside corner and gently pull. It feels as if you're going to break it... so be careful and don't get in a rush.

Oh.. btw... I'm not sure of there is a polarity difference in the electrical connectors, so I marked one of them with a Sharpie before disconnecting.

So you press in the left bottom corner and pull mirror from the top right corner ?

Going to be installing some mirrors with turn signals in the mirrors soon.

That works, I've done it. But, you better read the service manual before you try to reinstall it. Read it and understand it.

I just reinstalled mine... and had to apply waaaay more pressure than I expected. My arms were shaking I was pushing so hard. I suggest installing the glass with the mirror off the car... and being very patient with the first one. The second one will go faster.

As far as tips... there are two columns (better word is escaping me) that have a ball on one end and threaded internally. The power mirror rotates a threaded shaft inside these columns to adjust the mirror. When I pulled my mirrors off, those shafts stayed with the glass. I recommend leaving them on the glass. Line up the columns in the appropriate places in the mirror housing and use the palm of your hand to apply pressure behind the column (mirror side). Push in the bottom column (it'll click when it runs down the threaded shaft). Then push in the side column. Then center the glass in the housing, and apply firm pressure gradually in the center of the mirror using the palm of your hand. It's very important to keep the contact area big and centered. Ask me how I know.

I've installed side view mirror glass before... and these had my butthole puckered. (sorry for TMI )

If you're keeping the mirrors the same color, I suggest simply taping up the glass. I know you're handy with tools, but the risk is not worth the reward.

Mirror Face Replacement
Removal Procedure

Caution
When working with any type of glass or sheet metal with exposed or rough edges, wear approved safety glasses and gloves in order to reduce the chance of personal injury.






Push in on 1 edge of the mirror face glass tilting the mirror case to allow finger access.
Grasp the glass case firmly and pull the case from the mirror body.
Disconnect the wire connectors from the case (heated mirror).
Remove the 2 jackscrews from the mirror glass case.



Bend the jackscrew over.
Press down on the side of the jackscrew popping the jackscrew from the mirror glass case.
Save the jackscrews for reinstallation to the mirror motor.
Installation Procedure

Caution
When working with any type of glass or sheet metal with exposed or rough edges, wear approved safety glasses and gloves in order to reduce the chance of personal injury.



IMPORTANT
The mirror glass case is not the same for the right and left mirror. For ease of assembly of the mirror glass case place a little white lithium grease on the motor pivot and on the tip of the installed jackscrews.






The jackscrew springs must be positioned down compressing the fingers at the bottom of the jackscrews. Push to install the jackscrews into the mirror motor.



Rotate both jackscrews to position the ball flanges to be inline with the attaching hub. They will then be correctly positioned to the mirror glass case. (This is shown in the above graphic).
Connect the electrical connectors to the mirror glass case (heated mirror).



Align the case to the mirror motor.
With the palm of your gloved hand press firmly on the center of the mirror glass case until the case engages onto the motor.
Push the mirror glass case to the jackscrews.
Right mirror. Rotate the mirror glass case down and press firmly on the lower side engaging the mirror glass case to the lower jackscrew.
Left mirror. Rotate the mirror glass case up and press firmly on the upper side engaging the mirror glass case to the upper jackscrew.
Rotate the mirror glass case and press firmly on the outer side engaging the mirror glass case to the outer jackscrew. The jackscrews will give a clicking noise when properly seated.

The problem is the mirror glass glued to this plastic frame is very thin and I assume it gets brittle from heat. Mine snapped in half using this very procedure. Luckily replacements can be had on ebay for about $20 shipped (glass only).

My drivers side mirror changes it's position every time I start the car and never to the same position twice. I've tried to remove the mirror per the service manual but the I'm not comfortable with the amount of pressure required. I'm pretty sure I'd have to break it to get it off so I'm just living with it.
