Default Terrible clicking noise coming from the rear of the vehicle

I have some sort of clicking noise coming from either the transmission or the rear axle. My vehicle is an Automatic 01 coupe.

Whenever the vehicle is put into a gear, whether it is from:
-reverse to drive
-drive to reverse
There is this awful clicking noise that I hear, and it is multiple clicks too. The sound also happens as you are accelerating after you change the gear. It is the worse during the initial acceleration after you put it n drive from reverse.

I cannot remember the last time I had my rear end fluid changed, but the transmission fluid was changed a little over a year ago. Any idea on what the problem could be?

CV Joint most likely.

One thing I want to note is that all of the instructions I have read on this forum tells people to screw the hub bolt off, shoot lubricant in and then pull the hub thing where the wheel bolts are connected to. That is definitely not true. That thing is planted on there. The only thing that moves is the hub, where you can push it in and out. I just shot some lubricant in there and pushed it in as far as I could.

I had the "spline lube" problem, and it seemed to be a one click and done kind of thing in certain situations. The CV joint will usually be click-click-click.

what would you have to do to the cv joint?

I don't know much about rebuilding one. I think you may have to do a replacement.

Just a note: The best indicator of a CV joint problem is the clicking noise when turning at slow speeds. It should not be a "straight line" issue.

Remanufactured assemblies are about $70.

If the noise is not the spline, then check the CV joint boots to see if there are signs that a boot has torn and the joint has lost the lubrication.

When you lube the spline, it is the inner spline where the CV hub pulls into the back of the bearing hub that makes the noise, so you need to push the axle in and swab or spray lube between the hub and the CV joint surfaces.

you can reach around and grab the half shaft and push it towards the differential and that will make some more room for the lube -- are most people going with a spray product like chain lube for this?

If you are talking about lubing the inner spline, I just swabbed the CV joint and inner bearing hub surfaces with Mobil 1 to see if that made the noise go away, and the noise has never come back.
If I were doing it again, I would probably use a light grease so it would stay in place longer, but so far, just oil has worked.

I have a 01 coupe, auto and I have been getting what I call a clanging noise when I back out of the garage in the morning. At first I thought something was loose in the gas tank, at times it sounds like marbles are rolling around in a coffee can. Is this the same noise other are getting and if so how did you fix it?

Default Sockets

Getting ready to lube the splines but I am having a hard time finding a 33 mm socket, who sells these? I checked my local Sears and they stock 32 mm and then jump to 36 mm.

Default 33 mm

I think I am just going to get a 33 mm from ebay for about $13.00. Still cheaper than going to the shop.

A couple of 33 mm Axle Nut Socket sources for future reference:

SK Hand tools 1/2" Drive Axle Nut Deep Impact Sockets P/N 34283

Titan 33 mm Axle Nut Socket, 1/2 drive impact #T15333

As noted, these also appear reguarly on internet-based auction sites.
