Oil Filter
What oil filters are you guys using? I will be using Mobil 1 5w 30. I tried the search feature, but its messed up Gives me everything but what I am looking for. I got a filter from the dealership AC DELCO PF46, but I notice Gene at GM Partshouse is selling a Ultraguard PF44 I think? Should I get the different part number? What do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance.............. Dave

The Ultragaurd is a better filter for sure. Any top tier filter can be used. WIX/NAPA Gold, Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc. Many, many to choose from and all will perform well.

I've also been using the K&N oil filter for years and think its a great filter, but a lot of the forum members here have a heart attack about the nut that's welded on the bottom of the filter that makes it so easy to remove.

I did a fairly extensive search last week online (not the forum) for "best oil filter" and "oil filter reviews." Hit on a couple of sites that were very interesting and informative. The Purolator PureOne was rated the best with the Mobil 1 as a close second. Actually they were about equal except the Mobil 1 costs twice as much. They both have synthetic media, silcone gaskets and back flow seals and more reliable bypass valving. Each will stop bwteen 95-99% of particles to 10 or 15 microns and have great capacity (hold more crud before clogging).
I just put a PureOne on the car this weekend. $6.00 at Advance Auto.
The ACDelco is made by Champion and was not rated particularly high. The K&N, Napa Gold and Wix were considered good filters but did not have 100% synthetic media or the other features of the PureOne or the Mobil 1. Bosch filters (Champion products) were also thought to be pretty good.
Do search and read the reviews. More information than I ever new about oil filters.

I had trouble with ACDelco filters leaking during a time that I think they might have been making the endplates thinner, so they would not maintain pressure on the gasket.
I switched to WIX, and never had a problem, and I use WIX on all my cars now.
I also now think that WIX is a better filter.
Keep in mind that if you go to an ultra filter, you will also be getting more pressure drop.
I would stay with the standard filter.

Keep in mind that you can only see the added pressure drop due to a more restrictive oil filter when the oil pump is in pressure relief mode (ie, cold start with some RPM). When the pump is not in pressure relief mode (ie, oil is hot and thin), all of the pump's positive displacement volume is going through the filter/engine circuit anyway, regardless of the filter's pressure drop.

I ran the UPF-44 Ultragaurd on my Zee a few times and never say any oil pressure difference. Had also ran the PF-44, Amsoil and WIX/NAPA Gold ... all gave the same oil pressure readings under the same conditions.

Amsoil Ea032 is simply the best oil filter money can buy.
