LS3 water pump on an LS1 motor

Yup he's right. The accessories on a LS1 from a camaro are different. Look at where the pulley rests on your water pump. If it's right next to the inner edge of the pulley your fine. Otherwise it's not gonna work.
The corvette has the accessory belt closer to the motor than does the f-body (it's accessories are arranged differently as well). As a result the LS3 style pump works just fine on the vette. However it won't on a f-body because the accessory belt is too far away from the engine.
I'm not sure if how the belt is on the other LS1 setups. I've only worked with vettes and f-bodies.
Honestly though, it's not that big a deal. You save a few ounces of reciprocating mass. Otherwise the pumps are the same. If it's only a few bucks more it may be nice just to have a cleaner engine compartment with the smaller pulley on the LS3 pump. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

NOTE: 2004 LS1/6 C5's use the newer LS2 style tstat.
I do NOT know if it fits the LS3 WP, just a NOTE
CAN WE CALL THE LS2,3,7 WP'S ALL THE SAME BY VERIFYING PN?

I had an LS6 with LS1/LS6 water pump on it. I upgraded to a 418ci forged LS3. LME built the motor and said all the LS1/LS6 front accessories will bolt right up. I already had 43k miles on the car and wasn't about to put my old water pump on a 510rwhp motor. So I looked around at options and this is the best option short of spending a lot of money for an Evans unit, etc.
I compared the two pumps side by side, weighed them and saw the gaskets are identical they both line up identical and the tensioner mounts the same exact way. Your stock belt fits perfectly.
Here is a link to more information on the LS1/2/3/6 differences:

That's a good point the newer style LS2/LS3 pump uses a better tstat throat. It allows you to buy a cheaper tstat that is not a part of the tstat housing.
However, this is the same on newer LS1 pumps as well (They switched over in 2004 or somewhere there about) So the LS1 vrs LS2/LS3 pumps are identical at that point with the execption of the pulley.
And even if you get an older style pump and want the new separate housing all you have to do is purchase the newer tstat housing and regular tstat. They are interchangable.

I think this thread has convinced me that getting the ls3 pump is not much of an advantage over the ls1, especially considering replacement ls1 pumps are easier to find for cheaper

I can speak from first hand experience. They look the exact same. With exeption of pulley and dending on the year of LS1 pump the tstat housing. Maybe inside the casting is a bit better allowing it to flow a little more and have slightly increased volue.
Honestly though, I wouldn't bother getting an LS3 pump. If you're really wanting to upgrade the flow and get an edelbrock or other aftermarket high flow pump. That's my 2 cents.
