HELP my car will not shift into any gears...
I have a 98 auto. I was on my way home from playing ball and while resting my arm on the shifter it all of a sudden the shifter slipped into neutral without the tranny going into neutral. I drove it the rest of the way home like that. Well I have the whole center console out and everthing moves freely except it will not shift into any gears. It is stuck in drive. There is like a selonoid thing on the drivers side of the shifter. Is that shot? There are wires that go into it. HELP ME QUICK PLEASE!!!

I haven't been under the car yet but will be later today. Are the cables accessible after I take off the tunnel plate, or is the torch tube in the way?I would assume I will be able to see them once I pull the plate off.
Thanks guys - Rob

I will give GM this. They sure know how to make something so easy as shifting a car difficult. If anyone has had their center console apart and looked at the mess under the shifter boot, then they know what I mean. It could have been so much easier, like the Fiero. It is basically the same concept. One cable and your done.
I am done ranting and will give a further update later today hopefull to tell everyone it was something small

It's cable, not cables....and the part you are concerned with is fully accessible at the transmission. No sense in dropping the exhaust and tunnel plate until you see what's going on. I take it you don't have a service manual?

Yea theres is cable that connects the shifter to the tranny about the size of a pinky finger. get under the car and look at where this cable connects to the tranny, tell a friend to move the shifter back and forth to see it the transmission link moves. the cable has a white peice of plastic on both ends that could have broken. Lookin for pictures but cant find any.

I got it. The clip was missing off the cable at the tranny. This is a GM part only and I will pick this up Monday.
Thanks guys and everyone have a good holiday season.
