Cigar lighter removal and repair
Howdy folks, Just got my new 1998 coupe (new to me) really very good condition, the most annoying problem is the cigar lighter on the dash, not in the console doesn't work. I got my trusty V-O-M and measured the voltage as none, so the 12v lead has obviously dropped off the rear of the unit. My question is how in the samhill do you get to it to fix it ? There are two torx screws inside that little compartment that removed, did nothing. Do you have to take the entire dash/console off ? Any help will certainly be appreciated.

Make sure when you're testing it that you try a different grounding point. Otherwise you don't know if you lost your hot or your ground. Did you check your fuse before worrying about removing the lighter socket?? You might be able to drop the driver's side knee bolster and reach around from the side of the console to feel if the hot and ground are connected at the socket. If they are and the fuse is good, start chasing it down.

Not to steal the thread......... but my console cigarette lighter works, the one in dash, near ashtray does NOT work. Whats the fix for that? Its irritating when charging a cell phone/GPS Navigator.
Thanks.
Thanks.

probably a fuse problem as well. i forget what the fuse numbers are but each lighter has its own fuse. if you check in the fuse box on the passenger side under the angled floor mat it should tell you which fuse it is. good luck

After checking the fuses , If you need to get at the console or dash cigarette lighter wiring , just follow the instructions (up to the point you need) in this link...

Thanks guys, and yes, I did check the fuse first, then tried to measure the voltage. I never thought that there would be another screw behind that part on the dash. This is a perfect example of why this site is here, so good and the people are fantastic, thanks again.

If it is not the fuse then follow the vette essentials instructions to get the console off. You may find as I did that the connector in the back was broke and not making connection. Good luck and welcome to the club.

Thanks guys, the instructions from the link about taking the console and dash trim were right on and actually very simple, and yes, it was the connector on the back of the unit that had falen off, I couldn't find any broken parts to it, so I heated it so very little, only enough to bend the keeper tabs slightly and put it all back together, it works great, thanks.
