Default Help! Fuel reads EMPTY on full tank.

This just started yesterday... On my 02Z06, I have a full tank, but the needle is on "E" and the "check gauges" light is on. I know it's full, because I stopped to top it off and it took $12.

Is this the sending unit?? If so, I'm being told this is part of the pump and is a $500 part?

Also, my mechanic told me this morning that I have "2 tanks" and need "2 sending units".

I haven't looked into this myself, because I'm at work now.. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

Default Gas gage

This is a common problem sulfer build up from some brands of gas.. If you use chervron with tectron it will keep the problem away... You should be able to fix what you have by getting some tectron additive at the auto parts store it should clear up in atank or two

Several tanks of "fuel system cleaner" should clear up the gunk that is causing the sending unit to stick.
(not a full tank, just the recommended amount of additive).
Pretty common problem, several posts about using techron.

If you don't use "top tier" gas, it would be wise to start.

happens all the time to cars that sit for weeks/months at a time, I've had this on 2 of my 6 C5's

the sender is about 150 and takes about 1.5hrs to swap if you have to drain

Recently this happened on my '02Z, drove if for a few weeks and the gauge was fine, just sat for a year on the dealer lot

Well, I'm relieved to hear that this could be a simple/cheap fix.

I have a 2000 convert that had this issue a few years ago - lucky I still had extened warranty - that covered the cost - close to 1400 to fix parts & labor at a dealerhsip in Dallas, Texas - at the time
good luck

Do a search on the forum and read several options. I'm sure there are at least a hundred threads discussing the same issue. A few say Techron didn't work or only temporarily. Anyway, read up and learn.

Changing gas / techron didn't fix it for me - but it seems to have helped others - guess it depends on what the "real issue" is - sometimes the sending units do go bad - like everything - there might have been a batch that was marginal - when they built mine.
(They also forgot to put on 5 compression rings - 5 pistons only had one compression ring instead of two) That didn't leave me with any warm and fuzzy feelings!!

Well, time will tell... Last night I added the Techron and tonight I took it for a ride to get it all mixed up.. I'll take it out for a short run each night and hopefully this problem will clear up!!

If the corrosion on the sending unit wires is not too bad, the Techron should help. May take two tanks of treated gas. More out of curiosity than anything, before the mechanic tried to sell you sending units, did he mention the GM Service Bulletin re reprogramming for the increased sender resistance?

No, this is the first I've heard of it. Do you have any details?

this happens to me every onece and a while. Just burn throgh the gas and fill it up with new gas and possibly those fuel additives. I have a 97 C5 and the first day driving it this happened to me. I was going on a 80 mile drive each way. After I hit the hills and the sensor had to feel different pressures it worked fine. Just burn up that old gas and put in new gas, that worked for me.

It might take a tank or two to resolve itself. The same thing happens to my friends vette. Its happened twice, and each time the techron fixed it. For him, it seems to last about a year or so.

Do a Forum Search re: Fuel Guage and you'll find many threads on the subject and the TSB verbage. You can also go to www.nhtsa.com to check Recalls, Defects, Service Bulletins, etc.

Cheers

What was the part number for the sender? Was it a GM part or aftermarket? Was it in the right side tank or left?

My 00 would hang on half and then go to E. Techron with every other tank fixed it in about a thousand mile.
