Default Mobil 1 Oil Filter?????

I guess this advertisement @ Mobil 1's site got my attention. "Removes more contaminants than conventional
filters by using synthetic fibers" unquote. If my memory serves me correctly someone on this Forum sawed three
different oil filters in half and found that the filtering material in PF44 was good, UPF44 was better and the Mobil 1
M1-107 looked exactly like the UPF44 inside. Does anybody else remember this. It was a long time ago. I was
wondering if anyone has tried the K&N HP-1007. I really like the looks of the unit and the 1" nut on the unit for
removal. And don't all oil filters use "synthetic fibers" for their filter. I can see it all now "The Green Peace Super
Filter" made from 100% natural organic bat do-do!! :flag

Jim Dawes,

Do you know why the UPF44 and the Mobil 1 filter looked the same inside???

We did some research on who makes these filters for AC Delco and Mobil.

They are made by the same manufacturer which is Champion Labs.

So, I guess if you use a Mobil 1 oil filter on your car, you will get close to the same protection, if not the same protection.

I used to use the Mobil 1 oil filters on all of our cars until AC Delco came out with the gold filters. Now that the gold oil filters are gone, we have no choice, but to go back to the Mobil 1 oil filter.

We used to stock and sell both for the C5, but now we only carry the Mobil 1 filters.

Just thought I would let you know that the same manufacturer made both filters.

Funny, isn't it?

Yup, all three of those filters are made in the same place, however the Ultraguard was made to slightly better specs than the other two. It has been widely known for a while that the K&N and Mobil 1 filter are virtually identical though.

Guys,

No reason to pay more for the K&N filter as it is the same as the Mobil 1 filter.

Autozone carries them at: $9.99 for the Mobil 1 filters.

We carry them at: $7.95 each.

Shawn,
Thanks for the reply. About two years ago, one of the "wealthier" Forum Members was sawing filters in half for fun and/or knowledge and from what you are telling us the AC and the Mobil 1 are the same. He came to the same conclusion. Oil Filter Problem Solved. Thanks Shawn!! :flag

A local dealer found 3 cases, I bought 2 at $11 ea. The price is going up, if you can find them! These should last 6 years, because I don,t drive but 10K a year (maybe).

This is a riot - if my wife could see me now. We even share photo's of our oil filters like pround parents. We are searching all over for "oil filters" while she and her friends search out hard to find liners for her Longaburger Baskets. I'll never make fun of her and her friends again. I'll never look at an oil change as just a function of car maintainence again either.

Isn't anyone concerned about the shelf life of the UPF44 filters? I was going to get a case and then decided that in a few years the rubber would start deteriorating so I decided to bite the bullet and change to Mobil-1 now. Who knows, maybe GM got tangled with some kind of legal thing with Pep Boys and couldn't offer the filter through other outlets. Maybe we will see it re-appear as a different filter name sold at other stores. Here's hoping.

I think the shelf life of an oil filter is almost indefinite, so long as you don't leave it in a very humid place anyways. Keep in mind that in a lot of auto parts stores some of the lesser used oil filters could be sitting there for a couple of years.

Somebody on this Forum got an e-mail from AC Delco saying they would continue the UPF44 Ultraguard filters for 'Vettes...am I the only one who read this???
If the AC Ultraguard and the Mobil 1 and the K&N are all the same (I doubt it) then why do the exteriors of each look different??? Why does the AC have the best single pass filter rate...could be hype but I am curious.
I would think that K&N being a filter company whould make their own filter media at least and I am not so sure that AC Delco would farm out their filter manufacturing to someone else unless they just MANUFACTURE the filter for AC and at THEIR specs.
Your comments... :boxing :chevy :seeya

I found the thread on another Forum...Rick Zorn ACDelco Product Analyst Air, Oil and Fuel Filters AC Delco
"At this time, we are discontinuing the Ultraguard Gold Line of filters. However, we will continue to maintain the UPF44 for Corvette Owners. We understand your need for a performance product of this type and we are listening to our customers. Rest assured, we will continue to provide this product both now and into the future."
This was an e-mail response someone received from AC Delco...I guess they did listen to us (I can hope can't I)
We all should fire off an e-mail to him thanking him for his efforts and to MAKE SURE this comes about...it IS what many of us were asking for, isn't it??? :chevy   :D

I guess I'm the only one that is not real concerned about this. I use the UPF44's and really like them. But if I can't find them, then I'll switch to the Mobil 1 and won't have any second thoughts.

Apply some oil to the filter gasket and it should be just fine for years to come.

The gasket is teflon coated. I would guess the half life should be about 100 years...
