I have a whine sound while driving highway speeds in 5th or 6th gear in the 1500-1900 rpm range. If I let off the gas, the sounds goes complete away. At first I thought it might be the TSB about the intake causing noise, but I am wondering if it could be the rear end instead. It only makes it when driving 60MPH plus and especially in 6th gear.

Would it help at all to change the diff fluid or additive?

I would try a diff lube change (with the proper friction modifier) to see if it helps, and also check/change the MN6 fluid. Look at the old fluid & smell some. If it smells burnt you could have bigger issues. Good Luck!

Try the fluid change, trust me, it can't hurt just use the proper friction modifier as mentioned above...

So, what is this TSB you speak of on the intake? My 97 coupe gets a whine when on the throttle at high-speeds (over 50mph) and when releasing the throttle... Not highjacking your thread, just interested in this TSB since I know my car does something simuliar... Thanks!

Sounds like we have the same problem. Below is the TSB that I mentioned for the intake. The only fix I saw was to replace the intake, but on other cars I have heard you should clean the throttle body to help. I cleaned mine and it seemed to get better, but now it is completely back. I think it was just wishful thinking.

Have you tried changing your fluid to see if it helps?

I have seen other posts asking this question, but I have not seen a solution yet. Is this noise just normal on our cars and just gets louder with age?

Thanks for the reply and info! Yes I changed my differential fluid and the noise is still there...

My transmission has been rebuilt and after they (the tranny shop) test-drove it, he mentioned the rear end sounded funny, but the tranny was fine.

As I mentioned, I changed the differential fluid and no change. To me it sounds like the noise is coming from the intake/engine area, rather than the rear. Car runs perfect, so I ain't too worried about it. I know I've got fresh fluids in the engine/transmission/differential, etc. So I'll just turn up the radio and ignore the noise, I assume it's normal until I hear otherwise...

Do post-up if you find any info on this though... Thanks!

The noise will probably get worse. The chances are good the problem is in the differential. It will probably have to be fixed or replaced. That's what I think.

my noise is the opposite...I get the whine when I let off of the gas...if i push in the clutch or hit the gas, it goes away....I feel it through the shifter and it does not squeal like a TOB...


I'm wondering if it's not the rear, would the torque tube have anything to do with this?

The above statement perfectly matches the symptoms I had when my diff went bad. Mine started the whine at 40mph and increased with speed in all gears and would go silent when I let off the gas.

This started in my car and within 2 days got so bad I couldn't drive the car. Unfortunately these were the first 2 days I owned the car and it's already in the shop...I'll let you know tomorrow after they tear into it, how much it will cost to fix.

I’ve had the same problem for years on my 2000 C5. I took it to the dealer while under my extended 60,000 warranty. They drove it, heard the noise, and said it was normal for this car.... That was 3 years ago and the noise has not gotten worse or better. The transmission guy told me he has not seen this problem required a major work (ever). I hope he' right... so far so good..
