Re: Poll Does your C5 use oil? (90 Corvette ZR-1)
don't all cars use oil? sorry just bein a smart @##
you're not being a smart @##, just knowledgeable. ALL internal combustion engines with pressurized lubrication systems USE some oil. if they didn't, there would be something wrong with them. the consumption may be a trace amount and minimal, and may not even noticed on the dipstick, but they all consume oil!!! (so never say "not a drop") BTW, i add about .25 quart in between my 5000 mile oil changes.

As an aside it is interesting to note that, so far, 52 of the 74 responses are from cars with manual transmissions. Given that manuals only account for roughly 30% of the cars sold... Well it makes me proud to be part of this forum!!!

My oil consumption has improved from a quart in 1300 miles to a quart in about 3500 miles. I now have about 23,000 miles on my 6sp Y2K coupe.

If your C5 uses oil, It is almost certain that you have a piston ring / piston to wall clearance problem.
Take it to the dealer, tell them you have an oil consumption problem and you want them to change the oil and measure the consumption.
Dealers are doing ring/piston replacement like no tomorrow.

3000 miles on my 2001 A4, looks to be about 1/4 quart down, which is just fine with me. It might be interesting to run this poll based on the year model, as it appears the complaints of excessive oil usage increased quite a bit with the 2001s. I believe that is when GM went to the 9lb rings in place of the 13lb rings in search of reduced friction.

I took it into the dealer :chevy and expressed my concerns about the excessive oil consumption. He has me comming in every 1000 miles for the next 3000 miles to check it out. They also put in a dye that will allow them to see if there is any leaks.

From what I've read in various posts both here, and on other net sites, my experience of about 1 quart in 2000 miles seems to be "normal". The dealer service rep also says that this is normal, according to Chevrolet, however he and I both feel that ANY oil consumption really shouldn't be considered normal. The last car that I purchased brand new that used any oil between changes (2000 miles) was a 1971 Chevelle SS. And in the case of that car, switching from 10-30 to 20-50 stopped the consumption completely.
At $4.88 a quart, I'm not really happy about having to put in a quart every 2000 miles, but maybe the engine will "seat in" after a few more miles. By the way, it's not the $4.88 that I'm concerned about, it's just that I feel an engine shouldn't use oil, especially since I don't "beat" the car.
