Mobil 1...5W-30 vs 10W-30
I run 5W-30 in my '00 Vette year round..(Of course, living in Minnesota in the winter you don't drive a Vette much). My '00 Monte Carlo SS requires 10W-30. Is it ok to run 5W-30 in the Monte Carlo year round? I use Mobil 1 in all my vehicles.

Re: Mobil 1...5W-30 vs 10W-30 (cares)
I have started to run 10W-30 in my vette all the time now. It doesn't burn any oil running that. It burned a good amount of the 5w-30. Running 5w-30 shouldn't effect anything. 10w-30 might be a little better for extreme heat but 5w-30 is better in the cold as it will thin out quicker.
That is surprising that a '00 chevy would recommend 10w-30. They recommend the 5w-30 on the '99, '00, and '01 GM cars I have had because it is thinner and therefore more fuel efficient.

My vette is going into the shop for an ARE H&C setup, I will not run anything other than 10-30W from here on out. Either Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. I have been told by LS1 Mechanics that the 5-30W is the most common cause of oil consumption.

Re: Mobil 1...5W-30 vs 10W-30 (cares)
This is only an opinion but I think GM recommends 5W 30 to cover all the bases, the car gets shipped to many different climate conditions and the 5W 30 will work in all of the normal conditions, I live in Maryland and the weather does not normally get cold enough to really nead the 5W so I run 10W 30 all year in my Vettes, Caddy and John Deere tractor, works just great.

So if I switch to 10w30 in the summer, it won't hurt my car? Will I still beable to get the same times at the track and such?

When my car was in for the last oil change, the dealer changed it from 5/30 (blue) to the 10/30 (green) Mobil 1. I asked they now use 10/30 in all Corvettes.
No bid deal in South Texas where we have two seasons (hot and less hot). Winter has been cancelled for lack of participation for three years.

As I understand it, there's no difference between 5w30 and 10w30 once the engine has warmed up... they're both 30w. The 5 is a little thinner when cold, and thus should be better for use during really cold weather, as it would flow a little better thru cold oil passages after starting. In warmer weather either should be fine.

Re: Mobil 1...5W-30 vs 10W-30 (cares)
In my own mind I feel that GM recommends 5W30 in an effort to achieve CAFE standards.
Again, in my opinion, the 5W30 is a bit more volitile than the 10W30 (which I use) and many report using less oil when they switch to 10W30.
Check the owners manual....10W30 is optional down to (I think it's zero degrees if memory serves). I think either weight of oil will give proper lubrication.
I'm gonna hunker down now....in a short while there will be incoming. Yes, I know the oil cap says 5w30. I'm not proselytizing; just stating an opinion.
Good luck.

Living in Las Vegas it really freaken hot, damn hot or just plain hot. Since I bought my first 92 Corvette (two 92s, a 93 and a 98 with 42K miles) I have used nothing but 5W-30 Mobile 1 and haven't used a drop of oil. Guess I've just been lucky.

Re: Mobil 1...5W-30 vs 10W-30 (ZAP)
5w30 has to deal with MPG and not whats best for high RPM performance fun.
5w30 allows more blowby and waste then a higher weight under high RPMs.
I use 10W40 and have done so for about 6 years.
If I spend a whole day at a drag strip with 5w30 I lost at least a quart of oil, with 10W40, no loss.
The thicker the weight has to issues, it flows slower, so it retains more heat and if you were to use 15w50 you'd lose about 7 HP.
I do as Mobil 1 race team taught me, I mix 50/50 ratio 5w30 and 15w50.
With my mods, car holds about 10 quarts, not 6.

I run 5W30 on the street and at the track.
I must be lucky too because my '99 hardly uses any oil, even at track weekends.

Re: Mobil 1...5W-30 vs 10W-30 (Mike Schriber)
I ask the Mobil 1 rep this at their dispaly at VetteVest last month.
Their is really no difference between 5w30 and 10w30, unless you the engine is below say 40 degrees. The low number only factors in at start up, once the oil is warm it gets thin and is at the 30 weight.
So the concern is not when the oil is above 100 degrees. If you live in cold climates use the 5w, if not it doesn't matter.
There is no real diff. in start up at 50 degrees or 80 degrees between the two weights.
I found it hard to believe that a 30w oil would protect an aluminum engine but that's the way it was engineered. DO NOT USE A HEAVIER WEIGHT !!
The oil journals, bearings clearances, etc. were designed to use lower weight oil (so GM could make its CAFE e's most likely).
There is a reason that GM stamps the 4718M approval on each bottle. If your car is under warranty, don't even consider anything else.
Also I've seen posts that say using a heaveir weight could reduce a couple horsepower.

Re: Mobil 1...5W-30 vs 10W-30 (cares)
I have been experiencing some consumption and living in AZ. 2-3 months ago LPE switched me to Mo 1 15-50 I'm sure I do loose some ponies but its always so hot here the 50 WT.has made a huge differance. In the last 1900 miles 0 consumption I would be down 1-1.75 Qts by now.
At complete warm up 205 water 205 oil Temp I idlle at 38-40 PSI same as before they claim this weight is good for 50-120 degrees it very seldom hits 50 deg and my stage 2 always idles 60+ seconds before I engage a gear,at 74 deg. at idle I was at at 62+ PSI and crept over 70-72PSI while driving so no change in pressure.
IMHO I think alot of oil consumption is incorrect one size fits all viscosity even though I'm sure there have beenmany mechanical problems as well next STP.
Good Luck to all G-D Bess the USA.David S.
P.S.I believe the LPE TT Stage 2 pump is relocated for increased PSI. David

Re: Mobil 1...5W-30 vs 10W-30 (davidmax)
David,
What year is your car? I've got an early 00' and my engine is being rebuilt this week because of a bad oil pump. They also found the piston clearance to be too much, which caused my oil consumption problems (according to GM).
I would stick to the 4718M oil if you are still under warranty. If the 15w50 hides the reasons the engine is using oil you may not be getting the right fix.
Just my $0.02 worth, influenced by my recent experience.

Re: Mobil 1...5W-30 vs 10W-30 (Gary2KC5)
My LT4 car has been in 3 open road races in Nevada heat, speeds to 165, average 145, and I use 5/30 Mobil 1, and whats more, I change oil, drive 2000 miles to the race, race the 90miles, then drive the 2000 miles back. Guess what? NO oil used at all in the 5000 mile round trip, car still runs fantastic, so I feel 5/30 is plenty adequate.
PS my 165,000 S10 and 152,000 Blazer agree with the 5/30 also.
