No Excuse for Missed shifts. Here is the secret.
I keep reading about missed shifts in the 1/4 mile.
I learned a secret early on and it's never failed me.
1st to 2nd (should never be blown) As long as you are pulling to the left and down.
2nd to 3rd - This is the biggest mess up for people. Anyone who tries to "find" 3rd is looking for trouble. Just jam the shifter straight up as hard and as fast as you can with the palm of your hand. You will never miss it. It drops right in.
3rd to 4th - Same as above only down.
Try it you'll love it.
Especially with the Ripper.

Maybe some of these people with missed shifts are just releasing the clutch a little early, because if you are gonna shift fast, you are gonna try to get it in gear as best as possible.

I have missed a 1-2 and a 2-3 shift a few times at the strip. My latest technique: launch as usual, don't pull foot off of gas pedal, and don't pull gas pedal off of floor. Try that, you'll love it, especially the low et

Hmmmm. If you shift like the drivers of the Nissan commercials (panic shift), I think you'll be more likely to miss the shift. On the other hand, if the shift is like the guy in the RSX commercial or the girl in the Audi Quattro commercial, you're more likely to make the shift. Good footwork also counts. I'm thinking road racing though, but I think it would also apply to drag.

What RPM are you guys powershifting at and do the gears line up smoothly. I never tried this I think it would mess up the transmission if I got it wrong.

On the T56 trans I think shifting to 4th is safer when you roll your hand and face your palm to the passenger side door. I think the infamous 3-2 shift is more prevalent from the guys I've heard from. This is an almost guaranteed way to assure a clean 3-4 gear shift.

The more runs the worse it gets. I couldn't hit 3rd after the six run, temp I would imagine. Slamming only hit 5th.

No problem with the first four gears, but getting into fifth when out on the highway is sometimes hard. Any suggestions on that?

Re: No Excuse for Missed shifts. Here is the secret. (chuckster)
Alot of the people who have problems making shifts aren't necessarily because of there shifting ability and are also people who complain about the car popping out of gear occasionally. These symptoms are usually damaged syncros or bent shift forks.
1 - 2 : Grip the shift **** with the palm and four fingers on the right side of the **** and the thumb wrapped around on the left. Pull straight back and this grib will natually give you the tendancy to pull it to the left a little.
2-3 : Change the grib from the right side of the **** to placing your palm flat on the bottom on the ****. Push straight forward with the palm and shifter will naturally go over into third.
3-4 : Move your hand once more from the flat palm grib such that you turn your wrish to the left and have you palm facing down on the left side with all four fingers and the thumb on the left side (thumb on bottom.) Pull striaght down with your fingers and the shifter will naturally go over into fourth beautifully.
This technique has served me well driving many different manuals from Mustangs and Camaros, to Vipers and Vettes.

Re: No Excuse for Missed shifts. Here is the secret. (chuckster)
The Most often missed shift at high speed is the 1,2,3,2 shift. You are all pumped and you pull the 3-4 shift back toward your body. This one will bend those inards.
