Default Synthetic Oil Shootout!

According to sept, issue of CORVETTE ENTHUSIAST magazine. royal purple oil gives you 3.8 more h.p. on a dyno than mobil 1. Any known dyno comparisons between red line and royal purple?

how did they do the testing? Stock car or modded? Just seems that 3.8 is within the margin of error for a dyno so to make the claim doesnt seem valid.

You guys are absolutley correct. There is a margin of error on dynos
3-5 hp. I remember when Split Fire Spark plugs were introduced years ago and they claimed 10 hp gains... Its a marketing technique that results in higher sales.. Been going on for centuries... Remember Snake Oil.. The Cure all..... Oh yeah I got some land for sale too..

Seems like a meaningless statistic to me. Oil is not supposed to create horsepower but provide lubrication and engine protection. If it provides 3.8 more horsepower but has poor protection qualities I am not sure you have gained anything. I think you have to look at the entire spectrum of information to determine if it is meaningful or not.

If that were true then NHRA drag racers would all be using what gave them the most HP since their margin of winning is .001 sometimes. So with them not even using synthetic they would be losing quite a bit of hp? I dont think so.

How much protection and heat reduction does RP give. That is what I am concerned with. I look elsewhere for HP gains.

RP and Amsoil have proven to be as good as if not better than M1. That being said I still use M1, but have been considering the other 2. I just changed over to Redline products for Diff and tranny and they seem to work better.

The magazine forgot to mention that they also installed a hood seal before testing Royal Purple. Made all the difference in the world...

I use RP in the motor, syncromax in the trany and redline+GM in the rear end. You will not notice changes in the motor oil or temp (how to test it other then sit it in a controlled room, idle for x minutes ect...) BUT IMO the RP in the tranny made a bige differnce. Much better shifting. Now if I could find someone local who stocked it, I would change it monthly with the motor...

what fluid did you put in your tranny? is that from GM? what is the full name and where can you get it?

Royal Purple Syncro Mesh. Pepboys carry RP but I have never seen the syncro mesh in a store. I used to get mine on Fort Bragg. I think Thunder Racing carries it too under thier fluids section. BLUFF great stuff and I have heard similar results here with Amsoil. Go for it my brother!!!

THANKS, For a answer that actually pertains to question. ALMOST everyone on this forum has spent money on mods in the quest for more hp. $350.00 LS6 intake approx:7hp. $220.00 underdrive pully approx:7hp. e.t.c.-e.t.c. SO WHY is it redicolous to want to know if a 4 HP increase is possible for $40.00?

It was already stated... 4 horses is right around the margin of error for a dyno, meaning that you can make two pulls on the same dyno, with the same conditions, even letting the motor cool down to the same starting temperatures, and still see a difference of a few horses.

There could very well be horsepower differences with different motor oils, but I think it would be incredibly difficult to quantify them, and saying that there's a 3.8 horse difference is foolish.

RP is hella expensive though. I paid like $56 for 7 qts at NAPA
