A bit disapointed!
Was on the highway at around 50mph and my brother was in his 98 M3. We played a bit and he was in 3rd gear and I have an auto so I put it to the floor! All's great except it felt like the car only downshifted to 3rd and took a while to get up in revs. In the meantime he pulled to 70 and I finally caught up and passed him. Is a shift to 3rd at 50 the norm? I was expecting much more! When I punch it on the street around 30 the car goes like a bat out of hell.

At 50 it should have dropped to second and walked away. At 70 mine drops to second. Better go try it again and see what happens...

No Powerloader? If you have an A4, the Powerloader is an absolute MUST. Your brother will not get ya then...I promise :D

Re: A bit disapointed! (RonWhite)
These cars will not always drop down the same number of gears at a given speed. It is really irritating and can be very embarassing. I thought something was wrong with my car. I once asked C4C5Specialist about this very issue. He told me that due to all the various parameters involved in the computer's decision process, this is normal. I will bet you that if you had tried it again right after it didn't drop down as far as you thought it should, that it would have gone, and , if not that time certainly the time after. Lord, you shouldn't have to do it two or three times to get the full kickdown. My major points of irritation are 30-35 and 70-75. It shouldn't be like that!

I totally agree - I got powerloaded last nite and all bets are on!
I have been embarassed sometimes when the thing shifts to 3rd and not 2nd!
I turn up the tunes and gracefully look the other way

Drop_Top_Dave & RonWhite...........One word: "POWERLOADER!!!!"
Do a "search" on Powerloader, grab a 12 pack, and set aside six hours.

Drop_Top_Dave..........Sounds like you did a search for a internet site. Hit the search function at the top right of this page, type in Powerloader, and grab that 12 pack. Good luck.

If you got the A4 go for a Protorque 3500 stall, TransGo shift kit, and 3:42 gears. Then you will crush the Beemer.
I still think the M6 is still the way to go. Yank it down to the appropriate gear when you are ready. :D

I did beat him in the end, however I was shocked. Does the powerloader change the shift pattern at that speed! It's wild, sometimes it down shifts so much that I feel the back end is going to break loose and when I really needed it it felt like my Acura RL

Powerloader, schmowerloader. Ditch that A4 and get yourself a 6-speed! then YOU control the horizontal, YOU control the vertical :yesnod: :yesnod:
j/k: I don't know if this works on the Vette, but on other autos I've had times when I stomped it and it didn't downshift enough to suit me. When that happens, I just lift for a fraction of a second and stomp it again. That usually works. Try it and see if it works.

Well, what I do is stomp it the first time - and if I don't get what I need, I left off the throttle very gently and then stomp it again. I keep it planted until a Chevy dealership is in sight at which time I use both feet to stomp on my brake pedal, and yank the wheel hard into the parking lot. With the engine still running, I run into the dealership and pay 15k over invoice for any MN6 car they have. Then I'm happy
Good luck,
Justin

At 50mph or less, you could drop the auto into 2nd, floor it and then ease it up to 3rd when you bump the limiter.

Re: A bit disapointed! (vettvert)
While it's always fun to take shots at the poor A4's, it's kind of unlikely that he's going to be able to do a tranny swap now  Besides, just having an MN6 isn't enough, you also have to be decent at using it...
I would recommend that you look into the Powerloader... I've got an A4 also (with the 2:73's no less!) and the Powerloader addressed the exact kind of thing you are talking about. Downshifts are now predictable and aggressive and the shift delay is gone. The torque management system in the PL really works well...
3:42's+TC will obviously give the best gains, but it is an expensive route. For 500 bucks and an easy install, the PL will definitely push you closer to what you are looking for... Down the road, if you go gears/TC, it isn't a big deal to get the PL reprogrammed (for the tranny change) and usually costs $75-$100...

Re: A bit disapointed! (spookyp)
Here is how to get from 4th to 2nd without fail: forward, left then back.
I would never do such a thing :blueangel:
I am telling you those automatics shift by themselves... There is something evil about that.
