I'm in the market, and will likely go with HP TUNERS.
- It doesn't VIN lock, and has recovery software, so every little glitch while tuning doesn't disable your car, cost you a PCM, and make you mail your cable for a $200 fee.
- Only one cable needed with it.
- Supposedly it has every table LS1EDit + Scanners have + ~10% more
- Far cheaper.
- Seems to be a TON of people jumping on the bandwagon. Look at LS1Tech.com and http://www.hptuners.com/forum
I'm going be purchasing HPTuners VCM Suite too, probably today or tomorrow! I wanted something that would allow the full range of edit/tuning, plus scanning/data_logging, the price seems reasonable for a nice complete package.
I continue to hear good things about the HPT customer support, I like the idea of it not being specific VIN locked, just model/year.
Someone was talking about editing an existing tune - in fact, some guys over at LS1Tech, downloaded their Predator tune, then swapped back to stock and downloaded that as well. So now they have copies of an OEM, and a "performance" tune to do some comparisons, pretty neat!
Ken, if you're reading this, I had a question - are tune/bin files sharable across model years? Is this OK from a licensing standpoint (I mean, we're just sharing information)?
I was thinking it would be nice to view the parameters from a tune developed by someone who knows their stuff - if even for just an example. And do guys offer faster delivery service? On your website you can only checkout using ground, but since I'm in Florida, I didn't want to wait 5-6 days to get it.
Tune bins are not directly sharable across model years. However if you have a friend who has the model year you are interested in, an any of the table (tune) data can be exported from his into an excel spreadsheet and imported into yours. That is part of the copy/paste abilities of the program.
We will be adding a bin compare feature in the program during one of the next updates and are trying to figure out a way to implement model year viewing without screwing up our licensing
On the delivery issue, we do offer an overnight upgrade but you have to set it up with Keith first. The orders still only ship once a week, but we have overnighted a few.
Re: Whats the verdict on the HPTuner? (Ken@HPTuners)
Howdy Ken!
Thanks for the quick reply!
Great, that all makes sense! I talked to Keith via email, and it sounds like it's just easier to get into the regular delivery queue. It's not like my car down or anything, and I don;t even drive it much during the week ("work" from home).
BTW, He mentioned some twins on the way for someone (said things were a little crazy as a result) - congrats to mom/dad. We havent' had even our first yet, but my wifes family is "twin prone" so we might have that same special delivery when the time comes, heheheh
I went ahead and registered and starting combing your message boards to get some heads up when I do get my package. LS1Tech has some excellent information too, lots of do-it-yourself gear heads over there.
