Default A4 shift duration times.

On my A4 the stock shift duration varied from .163 to .50, depending on load. I reduced them to the lowest setting already present on the tables, which was .163.

My questions are, can you set the shift duration too short? Would zeroing out the values cause harm? What is the best setting for shift duration on the A4? Should I have it set higher or lower than .163?

Thanks,

AZC5

I am not sure of the exact values, but I do remember the LS1 edit manual stating that zeroing out the values would cause the transmission to wear much quicker.

I just cut mine 50% accross the board....I do know a bunch of people who zero'ed it out without any issues. I felt a bit better doing it my way....

Is there a tech tip on how to do this? That's a serious compliant I have. Shift times are too slow. Also, can you control the shift time as a function of RPM or load? My 7series BMW had an adaptive transmission that seemed to learn my likes. Thanks in advance!

go into edit>trans calibration>a4 shift firmness>desired shift time and multiply the whole table by 50% if you're wanting to go to 50% or zero if you wanna go that route.

Have you had any problems zeroing yours out? How many miles on the tranny with the duration being zero?

I would not go less than .100 for 1-2, 2-3 shifts. Overdrive 3-4 should be left stock at .500 (since this is an over-driven gear).

i got 15000 miles out of mine, replaced it and it was still fine but was not wanting it to break at the track.

Of course I was wanting all out performance.

Could you please explain to me why, in a little more detail, the 3-4 shift should be left at .500? Doesn't that just let the clutch packs slip and ware faster?

I hear that a Predator tune zeroes out all of the shift times. Can anyone confirm this?

On a similar topic, anyone know the best way to delete TM out of the A4(just tranny, not ignition)? I know how to delete TM out of the ignition section, but I hear it also erases Traction control and active handling. Is this true? Should I be deleting it in both areas, or just the tranny section?

Thanks for all of your help, I appreciate all of the responses.

I'm obviously missing something. Where do I find a table to edit the shift times? What tool does this require?

You have to have editing software like LS1 edit, HpTuners, or Predator.

Using a predator , set your shift time to 0 (or 25% less time ) , raise the shift point to 6000 , move the rev limiter to 6500 , and you can take the shift firmness up 5% max .

My shift firmness is set at 5% over the predator tune specs .

Adjusting the Shift Firmness is what will wear out the solenoids in the transmission prematurely .

I took mine to 25% above stock and the car would go sideways every time i hit second gear at 1/2 throttle ,, hehe ,, so i turned it back to 5% over stock for a little extra firmness b/c of my nitrous .

Ive made between 140-150 1/4 mile passes since i got my nitrous and predator tuner with no signs of major wear or damage on the tranny .

Regarding your Predator question, it is true that their "performance tune" changes all the shift duration times to zero. I'm no expert, but it does seem it would wear the tranny more this way. I can get quite a jolt when I apply throttle generously with the duration set to zero.

Is there a wat to change to change how long it stays in each gear before shifting. I dont like how quickly it poopies through the gears as I'm driving around town.

In HPTuners I have adjusted:

Part-throttle up/downshift tables vs %TPS and
speed.

WOT shift tables vs MPH, RPM

TCC lock/unlock tables vs %TPS, speed

Shift Adaptation times (I also read in my old
Predator Tune, at -25% and even -20% the cells
are all zeroed). Zero just means to apply full line
during shifts. Full line is full line, like you see at
WOT anyway. Just more of it... if that's gonna
break it, it was gonna break sooner or later. The
LS1-Edit "warning" is pretty nebulous and looks
like nothing more than a disclaimer to me.

Shift Base Pressure - HPTuners claims my Predator
values are "insane" (my word), over the maximum.
These at +15% out of +25% max.

Torque management - raised max engine torque cap.
Adjusted TM to try and maintain a max 300lb-ft through
the shifts. Still fighting with abuse mode suppression.

A slight correction. You cannot raise line pressure beyond max, electronically. The A4 comes with max 170 pounds line pressure. When you lower the values in the table you are increasing the % of max pressure at those TP's, up to 96% TP.
