Service Column Lock Soon
Why on earth do I have this code, and how in the heck do I make it go away? I don't care if my column lock works or not, I just want it to stop! :)

Re: Service Column Lock Soon (bigSS)
The code is from the column lock failing at one point in time, and the BCM is remembering this. To clear the code, just pull #25 fuse in the psg side footwell for 10-20 minutes, then reinstall the fuse.
The code will not pop up until the next time your column lock fails.
Thunder racing has the column lock 'fix' kit for $50 or so http://www.thunderracing.com/index.c...yid=1046#T2008

Re: Service Column Lock Soon (jmX)
Yes, I have this message also. It happened to me while I was on the highway. I ended up in a ditch and through some shrubs and bushes which scratched my car up nicely.
Scratched/nicked wheels on one side, scratched paint on my beautiful black Z. :cry
I got my friend to tow me out of the ditch and the steering wheel would not unlock. Tried to clear the codes, and now the steering wheel is unlocked, but the code is still there. I figure I should leave it there so the dealer can take a look. After losing steering control at 100km/hr, I'm a bit paranoid about it happening again. Actually, I'm totally paranoid about it happening again! :nonod:
This happened just a couple of weeks ago.
What causes this???
(sorry if I have hijacked this thread...)

Re: Service Column Lock Soon (DragMan)
I had this to happen to me as well. I was sitting in a parking lot, started my 2000 Black Vette, coupe and as I started to back up, my Column Lock activated. I was not able to clear it and had it towed to a dealer for repair. $350.00 later, I am worried it will happen again and not under warranty. Therefore, I will buy me the by pass.

1BAdRide did you let GM know about that incident. They told me that it could not happen while driving, when I wrote a letter to them concerning the column locking.

Holy shiznit! I thought this could only happen on ignition, before driving off. I had heard rumors of the column lock occurring while driving, and thought it was only an "urban legend." Glad you made it out OK.
I hope GM pays close attention to your report. If you haven't already done it, the column lock bypass is pretty simple to install. Instructions should be easy to find here on the Forum (assuming the Search function is back on-line again).
I feel even better about having the bypass in now! Again, glad to hear you're alright.

Guys,
Gm just announces a recall for this problem. I would assume any money spend will get refunded, or at least hope it will.

Re: Service Column Lock Soon (1BADRIDE)
I hope you sent in the complaint to the NHTSA as this is what they are investigating. The GM recall will not prevent what happened to you & GM is denying it can happen so file your complaint & experience with the NHTSA.
