Default Hypertech or LS1 edit after installing 3:42's?

Hey guys,

I just got my 3:42's installed in my 97 A4. I am debating between taking the car to a tuner with LS1 edit to change the shift points or buying a hypertech and doing it myself. Please give me your opinion or which route is best to go. Thanks!

I am using the LS1 Edit, & if you can use somebody that knows how to use it ,it will do everything you might want. I'm just learning but have been able to change the shift points & the gear change. I'm hoping that by using the forum I will be able to learn more & improve the way my car runs.

Clancy,

Thanks, I might just go the route of taking it to east Coast Supercharging and have then use the ls1 edit on it.

I am also looking into the shift point/A4/3:42 rear end issue. There is also another thread going that talkes about this as well.

Hypertech wont work with 3.42s on a A4 :nono:

Get LS1 Edit, predator, etc.

My car came with the G92 option, so the 3:42 should be within the tolerances of the stock PCM code. Since I have an older C5 my understanding is that the default WOT shifts occur in the 5500-5600RPM range. I believe I should have a little room to make a few tweaks. I know the HyperTech will not get the most optimal settings like LS1 Edit.

You will prob be ok but your speedo will be off and things like that...I would get it programmed with LS1 edit from a tuner just for the gear change and they shouldnt charge you much just for that

My understanding is that the reading presented on the speedometer is calculated after the final drive ratio. I tested this today while driving in 3rd (1:1 transmission gearing). At 80 MPH I was right at 3420 RPM which is correct considering the stock tire size.

After reading many post saying the speedo will not be off, My speedo is off. I have the G92 ( i believe the performance axle 3:15 Ratio) in my car also. The car shifts a lot faster now, so I think I am gonna take it and have it tuned with the Ls1 edit.

Have you changed your tire sizes from stock? Is it possible that the speedo was off before the gear swap?

Also, look into the P1870 issue. After you switch gears you will probably need to get some tuning done. HyperTech will not be able to correct the P1870 code from being thrown after the gear swap. (I know this first hand)

I'm thinking about buying LS1 Edit now.

Is LS1 Edit the only way to get rid of a P1870, and associated problems for good, or will the Predator do it?

Well for my car LS1 edit is the only way since the Predator does not work with 97 and 98 model years. I do not know if the Predator will correct this issue for your car or not.

Once upon a time I volunteered to summarize which programming solutions worked and which didn't based on evaluating OBD-II data rather than relying on advertising. A few folks sent me data, but I didn't get the broad sampling I was hoping for. LS1-Edit isn't your only option - solutions like Superchips, Fastchips, and TTS are also available. A couple of folks have claimed success with HPP3 but many more have not.

Hey bud, yes, the Predator will work for any gear swap. If you ever purchase one I can build you a custom tune for anything.

Sincerely...
