The Tech2 is a diagnostic tool as well as a scanner and does not have those limitations.

The GM Tech2 by itself can not reflash a PCM. The Tech 2 in conjunction with GM's SPS (Service Programming System) can be used to update and program calibrations on a PCM.

Well I guess it's back to the original question.

Will it overwrite a powerloader ?

Some of the tuners around here including myself have a Tech 2 that I can use to pull codes, take snapshots, and run the diagnosis data. However I don't have the SPS system (which runs on a PC.) The SPS (Service Programming System) system is required to update the calibrations on a PCM and is avaiable in a stand alone and GM network version. The standalone you update with CD's you receive on a subscription basis and the network version has a private connection to GM (satelite uplink) and directly receives the latest calibrations from them. This is what the dealerships use in conjunction with the Tech 2, but like I said many tuners do not have it. To further complicate things newer Powerloader programs are "locked." I have had dealerships tell me that their SPS/Tech 2 can not reprogram it completely, but only apply updates with the in car setup. There also exists a seperate bench programmer version. The bench programmer is just that, where they pull the PCM from the car and hook it up to a wiring harness on a bench - these setups are what you are looking for to flash your existing locked PCM back to stock. So the morale of this story is that the last few customers I have tuned who had locked PCM's I just recommended they buy a new PCM (~140 bucks) and have the stock flash put on at the dealership for ~75 bucks. We are looking at getting a SPS bench system so that we can reflash back to stock and apply the latest cals before we tune any car, but it may prove to be cost prohibitive at the moment.

I was searching the forum to see if there was a group purchase of a code reader (GM Tech 2) but didn't see anything...where's a realiable source to pick one up for the 2000? thanks.

My fuel gauge is wacky (shows empty and is half full) and I need to figure out which sending unit is faulty...among other things.

The Tech2 is rather pricey for single users. You may want to look at some of these prodcuts instead:

These don't seem to have the same adjustability as a GM tech 2.
They load programs not item by item.
Correct me if I'm wrong

I take it then I can get a simple scan tool or invest in the software I can load on my laptop, turning it into a almost pro diagnostic tool..am I understanding this correctly?
