Default max energy and 3.42 gears

Okay I've read hypertech sucks. Long story short, I put 3.42 gears in my '98 A4 that already had 3.15 gears in it. Lucky me I get the CEL and code for slipping tranny, 1870 I think it was.

Believe it or not, the car is fast enough for me in it's nearly stock form. The gears and a high flow filter in stock air box is all its got. I don't plan on making any other changes. Just driving it. Don't particularly like the idea of some tuner guy messing with my car, then I can't change it back when I want. I don't want to get a full tuning program and spend hours messing with it either.

Will a Max Energy update enough of the information to keep it from throwing the code? Just wanna make sure before I spend the money.

Thanks in advance. Randy

I don't think the max tuner will address any trans slipping codes---with a stock converter you really shouldn't get a P1860 or P1870 code anyway unless you have a real slipping problem---Did you correct the speedo and shift points with the hypertech ? If so this may be your problem---You DO NOT correct a C5 speedo when making a gear change---The speedo sensor is on the output side of the transaxle and not on the input side of the trans like in a camaro/firebird or truck--put the speedo back to stock---You do however need to make a correction for non-stock tire sizes---

I haven't bought the programmer yet. I want to make sure it will change the right information in the computer first. And I read on here that sometimes this issue pops up with 3.15 to 3.42 gear changes, but usually doesn't. Me, I'm just lucky I guess. Car was fine before the swap so I'm positive there is nothing actually wrong with the tranny. Code was thrown less than 5 miles from the dealer after I got off the highway.

Hypertech's website indicates that it will handle gear ratio changes, but the detailed info in their link isn't popping up in their explanation window right.

Wasn't planning on adjusting speedo, thanks for the tip. Seems to shift okay but I'll probably adjust the shift points.

Some discussion here about P1870 code, I think this is my issue as well.

Thanks!

Got an email back from Hypertech about the Max Energy, only handles 3.42 gears if you have a manual tranny, doesn't work for autos. Looks like I'll be getting a tuning program at some point.
