Reading on the forum here, I seen talk of people using tuner's to set up their cars. I've been away from "race cars" for a long time now. We used to break out the wrenches and screw drivers to set timing and fuel mixtures and such. Now it's the tuners.
So what's a good tuner to get so that I can store and modify different "tunes" and that is easy to read and understand? What is out there that would help me understand what I'm doing and what affects what when I do it? Is it all trial and error?
I got standard C5 auto LS1.
Of course I've seen the chips and stuff to make 500+ HP and get 30 MPH. Why anyone wants to drive a 500 HP car to get 30 MPH is beyond me. I want horsepower, buying the gas is necessary.
Is there tuners that can download setups from others (tuners), computers, other cars, and possibly from folks like us on the net? When mod's are made, intake, exhaust, etc. is re-tuning necessary, and what types of things are re-tuned?
Thanks for any input on this. There seems to be many products available and I would like to get one that seems to be proven by the folks here.
I have read the threads here after posting this in the wrong section/forum. I like the idea of trying tunes from others that have done this before, kind of trusting, but want the ablity to load, save, edit files/tunes and that sort of thing to a laptop.
So what tuners can do these sorts of things or at all?
To this day, I use HP Tuners VCM Suite that includes the editor and scanner. The two programs work with each other making tuning much simplier. The editor allows you to tune 100's or prarameters and with options like custom operating systems and real time tuning, this is an excellent choice for VCM tuning. The cable also has an external input connection to allow a wideband O2 (or any other 0-5V sensor) to be seamlessly intergrated to the scanner. As far as using other people tunes, I would not advise that. Exveryone has different parts and skill levels. Looking at another tuning can be used a reference. The best thing is making small changes and learning how that effects the car. You will find tuning to be addicting......at least I have. BTW, ask lots of questions
There is much to learn by using any decent tuning software. Sounds like you have a good understanding of the needs of an engine. The tuning of EFI cars is in 3 dimensions and is therefore possible to tune a car to almost perfection from every angle, but also makes it possible to ruin it. I too prefer and use HPtuners. They have a forum with support available at http://www.hptuners.com/forum . There are "stickys" at the top of the page. Before you ask questions, you should enter the "FAQ" and "getting started" sections. Read and try to understand. Then go to the Gen3 section and read about tuning issues and solutions. I have some nice tutorials and notes that I have copied and in some cases created or modified so I may better understand the processes. You're welcome to a copy of these items. PM me if you're interested and I can e-mail them to you.

I spend my money on Car Parts and Race Gas... The Rest I waste...
It's not all quite that simple---You need old school knowledge (which seems that you have) and the ability to manuver around a computer's workings--
A short lesson--There are 2 basic froms of operation with these ECM's--closed loop and open loop Power Enrichment--Most all your part throttle driving is done in closed loop which relys on the 02 sensors to adjust the fuel at a stoich 14.68-1---Thers is no better efficient fuel usage--period-- The ECM has the ability to make it's own corrections to the fuel to get 14.68 when things change like altitude ,air temp density etc---However when you floor it the engine goes into open loop power enrichment--Here the stoich 14.68 and the 02's are out the window and the ECM commands fuel to whatever is in its PE program--
From the factory the engine are all pig rich--otherwise some people would blow them up in the 1st week--Stock rich programs help save a motor from abuse--But in here lies the ability to make adjustments to the AFR to get more HP for the "sane " driver--believe me--you can easily melt a motor down by leaning it out too much with tuning-A stock PE is usually like 11.0 ---but the most HP is created at around 12.9
--This is just the fuel tuning---basically the same senario goes for the timing as well---
Fuel and Timing--The old school knowledge still is the same--only the way you change them is different--
A stockish type motor with bolt ons can usually self adjust the AFR in closed loop as the 02's rule there --But the PE fuel will change--most often goes leaner and must be checked
A hds/cam type motor will often take much more work--the ECM can't corrrect itself enough in closed loop --Fuel will be close but may take some minor changes to not throw codes--the biggest task will be to fix things like idle-surging,dying
And again in PE mode it must be checked becuase of the increased airflow it usually leans them down-
These are the basics--There are about 450 tables in the ECM that can be adjusted-There are many muluiplier factors and bulit in add on or subtraction tables-The SPARK file has for example about 55 tables alone !!!
Hope this helps some--would be glad to answer any questions--Again this is a one paragraph basic view of what's going on--
