Default I asked a for some help?

I asked in this forum about what exactly a tune was and what it accomplishes and how do you mail a tune. I got one reply that said he had heard that some got more HP. I read a lot of talk about a tune but does anyone know really, what it does to the car and how it does it?

A tune refers to reflashing the PCM with improved spark (timing) and fuel calibrations as well as things like rev limit adjustment, disabling the 1-4 skip shify function (CAGS), and a myriad of other things in an effort to improve the overall performance, power output, and drivability of the vehicle.
Depending on what you will be using to flash the vehicle, you can find tuners that can create you a tune and send it to you via email. You would then need to send that tune to the PCM somehow, either through a handheld tuner or a laptop based tuning suite.

Hope that helps.

Thanks
Mike

I appreciate the replys. Maybe I"l get a tune and see what happens, I still dont quite understand why the factory doesnt tune the vette to preforme.

Keep in mind that GMs priorities when tuning the car are different than most enthusiasts.
Their main goals are reduced emissions, mileage and low NVH.
They are not concerned with making every last bit of power from the motor, or making the tranny shift nice and crisp...

If you look at the stock tunes for LS1's you will find some amazing things! Like for 1, F-Bodys are tuned PIG RICH, standard C5's are still rich but leaner then an F-Body, and lastly Z06's are leaner then both. Why you ask? Keeps the performance of the vehicles in the correct pecking order.

Also, when GM tunes the cars they are tuned in a way that guarantees every Vette will run the same without 0 effort put into each individual car. Everycar will perform differently though, and haveing the tune done specifically to maximize your car is much better then GM's generic tune.

I'd say skip the "mail order" tune and take it to a reputable dyno or street tuner. Price range is $450 to $500. You'll get a much better tune.
There is a tuner in Suisun City that does dyno tunes and another in Roseville that does street tunes. Street tunes are done in real life daily driving conditions, dyno tunes are done for wide open throttle and simulated loads.
Both are very good tunes.
My $.02

Out of the frying pan and into the fryer. Find a tuner that can find their way out of a wet paper bag, get references, and get the real deal. Cheerleaders abound, so qualify your references.
