Default Experience with VHP Tuner?

Has anyone used the VHP tuner from Vinci Performance? If so are there any noticeable gains? I have a 2000 6speed coupe and I have heard that these tuners are good for automatics only. I am just curious about the VHP because they say you can make more adjustments to AF ratios and timing, but also I am affraid to make a mistake and make adjustments that would not be good for the car. any info would greatly be appreciated. thanks.

have plenty of experience. you can't make emough changes to be detrimental to the car. might run like crap until you fix what you did. here's a tutorial i made about the vinci tuner http://www.stealthram.com/vhptuner.htm

mrr23, thanks. I always wondered how in depth these programmers actually went into modifying the computer. My main concern is that this programmer is almost the same cost as a dyno tune. Do you know how much more gain I would get from a dyno tune compared to a Vinci programmer and would it be enough to feel the difference? I am just concerned because everyone at the track is telling me with even my few mods (MAF,Vararam,Borla straight pipes) that the vinci programmer will make a big difference. I am just pressed for time and I am into immediate gratification so I just thought that the programmer was the way to go instead of making an appointment and having it dyno tuned. Thanks again for the info.

hard to say. let's define a 'dynotune' first. i can get on a dyno and tune my car with the vinci tuner. i have done so with pretty good results. i've tuned the wife's car with it in a couple different configurations. first time was when i put heads on the car with stock cam. next time was when i put the 062 cam in it.

the other 'dynotune' is where you, or someone else, with a full tuning suite, like ls1edit, hptuners, etc... , tunes the car. can be more beneficial because you can makes changes to any cell of the timing and fuel tables. can is that you have to keep going back for any changes you want to do. the vinci tuner is limited. is makes across the board changes. but, you can make a change whenever you want. kinda hard to have the tuner guy follow you around.

weather plays a big role in tuning. i did some track testing for the tuner when it first came out. went to the track and used the hiperf stock cam +10% timing. picked up .2 and 1.4 mph with it. i went back the next month to the same track with no changes to the car. did the same test. didn't get the same results. got less out of it. it was hotter out. so, after talking with roger vinci, he said to pull the +10% timing out. BAM!! got almost the same results. .15 and 1.2 mph.

both have their benefits. you just have to choose what's best for you. if you want ot une it yourself, but don't want to learn how to use a full tuning suite, then go with the vinci tuner. if you have some knowledge and aren't afraid to get your 'brain' dirty. then buy a full tuning suite and have fun learning it. it's alot to digest. if you want to do neither, then have someone do it for you.

mrr23 thank you for all the valuable information. It has helped me to decide and I think I will go with a tuner in Tampa called RevExtreme. I have heard nothing but good about those guys. I was also wondering, if I could still buy the Vinci programmer after RevExtreme programs my car and I save the tune from RevExtreme in the Vinci...is that possible I wonder. Then I would have a custom tune, plus if I were ever get the itching to play around with the programmer I could do so and if I didnt like the program I had changed, then I could just put back the program from RevExtreme. Have you or are you able to do this with the Vinci programmer. Sorry for all the questions, but I am just trying to get the most performance out of my hard earned money.

here's the timeslips from the first time out. these were back to back runs. made a pass, pulled into the pits. made some changes, pulled back into the lanes and made another pass. about 10 minutes. only mods to the car at the time was SLP airlid and cutout.

here's the dynosheet when i tuned her car after i put the heads on

then here's the dyno after i installed the 062 cam

revextreme is a good place. should be jeremy formato that does the tunes there. the tuner may not be able to recognize what the tuner guy does and may lock up your PCM. i've seen where it's been sucessful and not sucessful in downloading non OEM tunes.

Great results. I unfortunately am not so talented of a driver and I have trouble with my launches. Also the reason i am getting a tune is because i think something is seriously wrong with either my driving or my car ...lol...because I have only turned out a best time of 9.1 in the 1/8 mile. I guess i need more practice, but i just want the tuner to look at the car to see it something is seriously wrong with it...thanks mrr23

mrr23..that would be great. maybe i can get some tips from you or your friends about launching my car. I bought the car a year ago, but I was in Iraq for almost a year so I have not had enough seat time in my car. Now I am back for good and so I think I will try and get a little more practice in the car at the track. The only track near me is Sunshine and it is only the 1/8 mi. I see other vettes that seem mostly stock running in the mid to low 8's. I just dont think I am that bad of a driver to be running almost a full second behind these guys. Anyways, hopefully it wont rain here wednesday and I will be able to make a couple of passes to improve my times. thanks
