Default Pay for Tune or Buy a Hand Held

I have an 03 coupe, A4 with blackwing, Kook's, stock cats with x-pipe and corsa exhaustand 3:15 factory rear end. I had it dynoed recently and it was mediocre at best 310.1 rwhp and 315.6 rwtq.

The dyno guy suggested I do a tune because he thinks these mods should produce much more than that.

Any suggestions on whether I should buy a good hand held or have a tuner do it? I understand that with hand held you can put your stock tune back in at any time. If a tuner did it and you wanted to go back stock for some reason, what are the options.

Thanks for the opinions.

Any suggestions on a hand held?

No handhelds, too limited..

EFILive or HPTuners or pay for a tuner. It depends, I think, on how crazy you go w/ your mods and whether it'll happen all at once or in stages. If there are good tuners in your area I'd talk to them about their rates.. Some tuners charge $400 and a much smaller ($100) for future ones.. Doing it that way, it isn't so bad.

if you AFR tune yourself DIY; then you'll need to buy two items:

1) the programmer (whether handheld or laptop type)
2) a Wide Band Oxygen Sensor outfit

without #2... you won't know what to change with #1

Quite a lot accomplished with just a "handheld".

Depends on your goals. Since you are already at a dyno, you do care enough to spend some $ on a tune. You can buy a hand held and gues, or go to a good tuner and know and have the dyno sheet to prove it, or better yet, go to the track and see it Lots of folks here get huge gains in A4 cars by removing the TM, but on an A6 or A12, get an LS1 edit done for sure. If anyone is close, and good, get it tuned. You may have to pay a bit more at 1st, then less each time after a mod. Good luck!

Great advice ! Now, can ya plz tell me where you got your "Dyno tune done for $400, with $100 for future" Deal ? I'm in the bay area as well, looking for a shop that would do exactly that.

Wrong Coast, but a respected tuner over here: $299 -- reference point.
