Default Should I get a 160* w/ my Predator?

I am thinking of buying the Predator tuner and noticed that many forum members and some magazines are using a lower temp stat when they make this mod. Would I be maximizing my predator with a lower stat? 160*? or 170*? Let me know what you think. (I know everybody has an opinion on which temp stat, so just predator user opinions only, thanks). I not looking to lower my temps due to over heating, just want to maximize this mod.

I have a 01 with A4, vararam, larger air bridge, corsa indy with x pipe. I don’t plan on doing any other mods, street use only. I don’t feel like its ever running hot, 192* norm, 204* in heavy traffic. I’m assuming the lower stat might make it run richer or change the timing a little bit for more performance?

Has anyone just played with the stats and noticed a power difference only? (and not the "cooler engine = more HP" theory)

Jeep,
I had ran a 160 for a little over a year in my Vette. I do have the Predator also. I installed it for a pinging issue. I have fixed the pinging. And reciently put the 190 t-stat back in after a year with the 160. I think the Vette has better driveability in the lower rpm's with the 190 t-stat.

BTW the pinging was caused by extra air getting in on the backside of the MAF.

With the preditor you are able to check the error's and I found that I had 30+ errors indicating the engine temp was too cold. Whether this affected the power I don't know, I do know I get 2 MPG more on the interstate with the 190 t-stat.

I have played with the WOT Fuel Trim and Timing settings a lot, you can really slow your car down if you have something off. One time I wasn't able to get under 14.00 sec in the 1/4. I have it to 13.1 sec in the 1/4 now and will keep trying for more.

I hope this helps a little.

Thanks for the info, I was thinking of leaving my stat alone. Any other ideas from anyone else?

Hey, tv7son

I just purchased a preditor this week and have tweeked the stock tune a little. Can you tell me what has worked best for you? I have a
99 coupe, A4, twin cone air intake, CF air bridge and Z06 exhaust.

Thanks,

Thanks,
I have the default preditor tune, plus have the timing bumped up about 2%. the fans come on at 220 and 225, off at 210 and 215.
I raised the rev limit 200 rpms in 2nd and 3rd gear also.

This sounds kind of hokey but I found that there is a sound that the intake makes when everything is working at it's best. It is kind of a low rumble/snort at WOT that I don't hear when the timing or fuel trim is way off. When you are tuning by SOP you have to rely on all your senses

I know there is more for me to get but that is for another day.

Mike Mercury seems to really know about the preditor maybe he can give you some inbut.
good luck

SFS

So should I not worry about changing to a cooler stat? Or is it just a matter of personal preference/opinions?

I think you can get a cooler stat and be sucessful with your tuning.
Patience is really a virtue when tuning with the predator.
But to get everything tuned to your car you need something to referance your tuning with, which I have not done.

Just using the predator you have to play around with the tuning until you feel it is right. And you know that is a is a around here as everyone has had verying sucess with their cars

Just take your time and don't get frustrated.

Now where is Mike Mercury when you need him?
