Re: Deep discount on the Passport 8500 Radar Detectors (Tuan Le)
How sensitive are these detectors?
I ask, because I'm beginning to wonder if the CHP are using low power transmitters, or some type of pulsed transmitter to keep the radiated power down, because I got a ticket a couple of years ago from a CHP that was dead ahead of me, coming from the opposite direction on the freeway, and my detector never made a sound (I know he clocked me because he knew my exact speed).
Then, last night, I was coming into work, and had a CHP cruiser come right up behind me, and the detector was showing only one light on the power level indicator, when it should have been screaming.
My detector is a Whistler, and it's a few years old, so I don't know if maybe there's been updates I've missed. I just got another ticket, and the wife is houding me to use the detector (I haven't used it for a long time after that incident where it didn't go off).
Edit - I just found the answer to my own question - the new Ka Band radars are using low power, in addition to a wide bandwidth, so they're more difficult to detect, especially with a cheapy detector.
Tuan, how long will these prices be good?
Thanks. John

I am interested in one as well. Somehow this thread passed me by. Can I still get one at the good price?

Just ordered the 8500...wish I had it a couple of weeks ago. If it keeps me out of trouble for the next 18 months, it'll have paid for itself. Thanks Tuan. John

You should definitely take a look into this new compact GPS from Garmin. http://www.garmin.com/products/sp2610_2650 :)
Tuan
will the detector work in Europe? Or can you make it work in Europe (software?)
Thanks

I don't know anyone that have tried it before. I spoke with the Escort rep today and was told it is designed specificly for the U.S only. Do they have different radar detector over there? What are your local rules/regulation on the these?

please do me a favour and call that Escort guy again and let him check if there is a german software on export models and how we can get one of these. Who else than he can know this? Remember that the price for an Escort over here is twice that you offered.
Thanks in advance
Frederik
Just found this:
Bell Euro 330
Whistler 945 Euro
Valentine one with special switzerland program

Frederik,
I spoke to another Escort rep, and he isn't aware of any model with German software either. :( Sorry, couldn't be any more helpful.

Tuan
thanks for your help anyway.
It´s a pity because your price is excellent. But if I buy one that does not work fine over here, it´s useless.
Will still try to get some info over here.
