Default Calling oil experts ...

So I read that I don't have to necessarily change the synthetic oil every 3k miles, but the general recommendation is to change the oil filter about 2500- 3k miles. These #'s are under "normal" driving.

Q's:

1. When I pull the filter off, won't the oil come out anyway?
2. Anyone follow these suggestions?
3. Who says, forget the suggestion and just change everything, every oil change.

TIA.

Dave Q.

Common thought is synthetic oil will outlive filter life. I tend to agree and will be changing my filter at about 50-60% of oil life remaining, 2 filters per oil change. You won't lose all that much oil, whatevers in the filter and maybe a little more.

I change my oil and filter about every 4500 miles (40-45% of oil life remaining). If you decide to just change the filter, you will only lose a little oil, mainly only what is in the filter.

1. Unless you change the filter with the engine running, the only oil you'll lose is the 1/2-3/4 quart actually in the filter.

2. Only if you have a very extended change interval. I do mine once a year (per owner's manual) and that has been around 8K mi and 40-50% oil life remaining. I have been thinking about changing the filter at 6 mo. If you only get 4-5K mi till the change oil message, there should be no need to change the filter in between. That 3K oil change stuff is BS when you use synthetics. Unless you really don't mind throwing away money, follow your DIC, or once per year.

Profligate or what?

Synthetic oil will still be working more than OK after 10k miles if you only do road driving.

Changing it any earlier is justing peeing money and expensive toxic chemicals away.

Most European cars now go 15k to 20k between scheduled oil changes and they rack up high and trouble free miles on this regime.

Oil is much better than it was. Time to catch up with technology guys.

I've read elsewhere the oil will outlast the filter; the filter is holding most of the dirt. I change both around 5K and the oil looks pretty good. I think you can get away with 7500 to 10K miles as long as it's done within a year. I fill the oil filter halfway when installing a new one. Overfilling is very messy. This is all based on synthetic oil.

i changed my Mobil1 at 10k miles, and my K&N filter at the same time. The oil was still somewhat brown in color. At 10k miles, with a nice oil filter (they usually cost like $10 - 15) you will be fine.

I'm almost positive that the algorythm that calculates oil life assumes that the filter is unchanged throughout the life of the oil. As the owner's manual states, change the oil when the D.I.C tells you to or once per year, whichever occurs first. I change my oil and filter every year at approx. 5500 miles.

Amsoil once a year with filter at 6 months, or 12500 miles.

Just read it on one of those DIY write ups .. someone posted a link about jacking points on the C5. The oil change info was listed on that site.

Thanks for all the info people!

I personally change my oil now more than 3500 miles regardless. If the oil is really dark I will change it earlier than this. I like a good AMBER coloring and will do whatever it takes to keep it clean.

I respect everyone's opnion on this and I do respect the oil life guage, but I like my oil a certain way and will spend money to keep it that way and it cannot be harmful to keep fresh clean oil in the block.

Micah
